Shortly I will be installing a FP Big T28. It's my opinion that a front mount will likely be over kill for this turbo. Am I correct? I do not have an HP or 1/4 time goal that I am trying to reach. This turbo will be the only up grade turbo to go on this car. My supporting mod list is;

  • 190 lph pump
    Greddy typ S
    RRE hard pipes
    Greddy 3in Cat back
    RRe DP
    3in Cat
    SAFC II
    Injen pipe w/ K&N

The only other mod "possibly" in the future is a MAFT set up. I plan to max this set up out with the Big T28. I'm cetain the stock side mount will heat soak easily if I am able to run a boost setting near 20 psi (not sure if this set up will do it) and run it a time or 2. I'm not a track guy and not a huge street racer, every now and then is about all the car will see. Rumor has it my AC may become inefficient with a front mount, and that doesn't sit well with me. Also since this is a T25 family of turbo, a big core front mount seems that it would be over kill for this set up.

Will an upgraded side mount be sufficient? Are there any fitment issues with a 97 FWD? Is there enough air flow to the sidemount to make it acceptable?

Thanks for the input.

wondering the same... I have pretty much same upgrades and just ordered the fp big t28 with the 17 psi actuator a few days ago. I thought the same that a front mount would be over kill for the t28 and the only good smic i found were from bullseye, hahn and dejon but for 400-500$ might ass well buy a fmic... (supra smic - too much work and deforms front bumper i heard)

Upgraded sidemount would work just fine. If you plan on going with a bigger turbo or anything i suggest fmic and a fmic will not hurt you with your current set up just dont get the biggest fmic on line and 3inch pipe.

A large sidemount would be sufficient for a Big28. If you're going to max it out, a FMIC might be in your interest but it's not necessary unless you're gonna be making hard pulls with you car repetitively. What you're speaking of as far as your AC goes is due to the fact that the FMIC will take the place of the radiator air scoop and block a good amount of airflow to the radiator itself.

FMIC adds about 400 rpm of lag. Also makes engine cooling much worse. It does however provide quite a power increase and "consistent" power. I'd try a large sidemount
and make sure you try to reuse the i.c. duct and even go so far as to duct tape the duct to seal it to the I.C. I did this on my Alamo sidemount I.C. and it worked out well.
