Hi, My stock t25 went out about a week ago and i am looking for a mild upgrade. I was originaly going to buy the Fp big t28 because i read through alot of threads saying that it was a good turbo. I was planing on buying it from extrempsi but just yesterday they removed it from theire online store. All i see is the garret big t28. How good is the Garret big t28? I couldn't find alot of threads on it. Also, what else do i need to buy for the new turbo besides the manifold gasket & o2 gasket and the oil feed line (its the oil filter location one right, not the head one right?). I do have evo injectors and 190 walbro pump on the way with the new turbo. Any help would be grealty appreciated, Thanks

If you are only looking for a mild upgrade, find a used 14b in good shape. You'll need an install kit, but they come with a SS oil feed line (run it off the filter housing). This is also a cost-effective solution. But if you are set on going new, I would take a 16G over a T28. Looks like you may need to do a bit more to your exhaust to take advantage of it. Just do your homework, and it's an easy swap. Good luck

I would go FP ported Big28 all the way if it were me, that's if your dead set on it. I use to have one before my FP Green, and it run very good.

I pulled on a friends TRE ported 18g powered 96 Talon awd by 2 car lengths @ 20psi, and we both had about the same mods except for turbos.

The FP Big28 flows 550 cfm's which is more than the regular 16g at 505 cfm's, and about the same as a regular Big 16g.

The only 16g variant turbo out there that will probably flow a little more than the FP Big28 is the EVO III 16g, in which is a very good turbo as well.

I agree with Drubble. A good used or rebuilt 14b or 16g (depending on power goal), j-pipe and licp can be had for hundreds less, why spend so much more to get the same performance?

If you are looking for more than ~375 whp you can't effciently use a FP T28 anyway. The Garrett T28's are too pricey for the exact same potential, I'd go Evo 3 16g all the way just because you'll have some room to grow and it costs much less. The E316g is capable of as much as the FP T28, and spool is pretty similar IMO. FP sells their T28 for $765, you can get a brand new E316g from RRE for $550.

I've reviewed countless T28 logs, and a few small 16g/big 16g/EVO III 16g logs. On paper, a T28 can outflow a small 16g. In reality T28's, big or small or whatever, flow almost identical to a small 16g, near identical. The T28 compressor map was done utilizing a .60 A/R compressor housing, which all DSM T28's don't use, they are running .48 A/R if I recall correctly.

Your tuned out T28 is flowing somewhere around 35-36 lb/min, same as a small 16g. Big 16g's are around 38 lb/min that I've seen logs of. EVOIII 16g's are around 39-41 lb/min tuned out.

A combination I'd try might be an EVOIII 16g with a clipped turbine wheel on a ported 6cm housing. Use that setup on an autocross or something, then swap back in the 7cm
housing for the street. I did this on a clipped small 16g and the spool up was 2800-3000 rpm for 15 psi on a 1st gen.

Well thanx for all the help . Greatly appreciated, im still sticking with the Fp big t28... is the turbine housing for the Fp big t28 7cm or 6cm?
If you don't have it ported it will remain 6cm, and if you have it ported it will be 7cm. If you do decide to have it ported make sure you get a stainless steel 7cm gasket to go along with it. :)

Go with your original choice... the FP Big28. Thats the turbo I'll be ordering later today after I pick up my paycheck. I'm so excited.. I've heard nothing but good things about this turbo. Should be fun. :thumb:

2 weeks is a small price to pay in light of knowing that you're getting a quality and well-built turbo.

Well.. it depends...

The turbine housing is 6cm stock, same as your T-25 turbo. However, if you purchase the $95 porting option, FP ports the turbine inlet to 7cm.

I love my FP Big t28. Great turbo and I had no issues installing it. I've had it for about 6 months now, no complaints. Pulls hard with a tune in DSMlink. I'm pretty sure that the FP big t28 is the same as the garret t28, the center section of the turbo is a garret center section, so really its just how much cheaper you can get either turbos for. However I have heard the FP turbo flows a little more, not sure though.

I would have to agree with generation x since I have his old turbo! I love it! It makes the stock T25 look goofy but it sure as hell overcooks the stock smic. I installed my BigT28 with a DNP ss exhaust manifold and then later on added a Hahn Racecraft big smic. After putting on the BigT28 I was having issues with heatsoak on the stock smic.

does Garret still make that turbo? I always wanted to look at one of those. It was supposed to be setup like a Bit28 but used 16g turbines instead. It wa supposed to be the hot ticket but I haven't seen anything of it in a long times three or four years at least.

hey by the way I just wanted to say that Generation X was a standup guy. I bought the turbo off him online after being ripped off by some other guy in New York. Generation x was didn't bullshit around and sent the turbo out exactly when he said he was going to and I received exactly what he had advertised. I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything from him in the future. Like i said a standup guy.
