Best mounting place for a FMIC

Not to sound like an ass... but that bottom mounting picture is horrible. I honestly think the view of your tubing on the side of the intercooler looks tacky with the open section of your bumper cover.

No offense taken. With the tubing I had, that's all the tighter I could get the bend. My stock SMIC was bent and leaking. I just hacked the bumper to get the new FMIC to fit. Plan is to get some aluminum bends and TIG it all together. I need a new bumper anyways so cutting it wasn't a heart-breaker. This one has bondo, epoxy, and stainless steel plates holding it together from collisions with:
  • a hillside at ~40mph (bent and punctured the SMIC and cracked the bumper in 2)
  • a small deer or dog at 65 (cracked a bondo/epoxy patch and blew out the fog lights)
  • and most recently (Sunday) my g/f's mom's Explorer backed into it (bumper now 2-tone). :toobad:
I even tried to repaint it to hide the chips and cracks, but the guy who sold me the paint didn't give me the right color  so now it doesn't even match the rest of the car. Oh well, it just has to last the winter.

If I had the money, I'd have piped it nicer with some better bends, but due to lack of funds (college) and the need to drive my car up to school for work, I just made due. It'd be nice to have a DD other than this to drive when I'm working on the talon so I could wait for parts, but I'm lucky to even have this. If you have a TIG welder and lived closer, I'd drive this monstrosity on over and we could fix the piping mess. Since that isn't happening, I'm stuck waiting until spring when I once again have access to a TIG.

Oh, and the pipes will (with a cleaner/tighter bend) be TIG welded come next spring. Then it will be just 5 couplers (intercooler to TB has to be 2 pieces). And a new bumper to hide the battle wounds.

Hell, all those couplers came with the piping kit (except for the long legged 90). :sneaky:

are those bolt holes that you weld to, aluminum or metal. I need to mount mine. I had zip ties.

Not sure what you are asking? I did no welding for the install. The bungs on top if the FMIC were welded on at the factory, and I drilled holes in the upper rad support to bolt the upper FMIC support. What you can't see in the pic are the bars under the FMIC that support it from the bottom. They bolt to the lower rad support and similar bungs welded on the bottom of the FMIC. The bungs are aluminum 8x1.25mm and the supports are just normal everyday hdwe store zinc coated mending braces.

Kahl,

It is Rustoleum cobalt metallic blue spray paint. Probably similar to daytona blue. I loved it, but I found my GSX in red and had to get it. I guess I like loud colors for DSMs, which is uncharacteristic of me.:shhh:

wow, i never would have thought that was rustoelum. I am asking did you weld those brakets to the intercooler. The top brackets.

No, they were already welded by cxracing (or whoever they get the intercoolers from.)

Thanks for the compliments on the paint guys. I did a LOT of prep work, which is most of the work in painting. Pressure washed, engine degreased, steel wool & sanded before I painted. I even clearcoated after the base coats. Since it isn't exposed to the elements, rattle can enamel was sufficient for the task...I guess. I'll never know because the car was totaled about a month after the complete rebuild. I was t-boned. I don't want to steal this guys thread, but I got pics of the carnage. It's amazing that I am still alive.

:toobad: Tell me you at least saved the engine?

Yeah, this thread was a paradigm of responsibility for the first 30 posts...

How about those pics?
