I just bought a new 93 TSI AWD, and I want to start modding as soon as i get my timing belt situation sorted out (Previous owner changed belt, but not pulleys, tensioners, etc.). I read the tuning guide, but I wanted to get some other opinions.

Im leaning towards either exhaust or intake, as the first.

It seems the Greddy Evo exhaust is popular and sounds good.... Any sound clips?

What would be the best intake for a 1g awd?

Thanks everyone.
Dan

The first thing you should buy for your car is some knowledge for you. Get some books on turbo theory and use as well as general car tuning.

This will save your alot of money that you will probably waste and allow you to build a faster car!!!

excellent choice to get knowledge first, also DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE raise the boost level if you dont have a different fuel pump like a 190 or 255lph.
Youll f*** up your car up real bad like i did :thumbdown

knowledge is probably the best mod you can have, unfortunately i didnt have at the time, but now after 8 months of sitting on my ass and just reading, i can finally say i have a wee bit of knowledge... the sad part is i still got another 3 months before i get my car back:cry:

Uh...I'm pretty sure you can safely boost to 15psi without a new fuel pump. Even the tuning guide has boost controller before fuel pump.

I think the best bang for buck mod would be:
1. 1G BOV w/ adaptor- $70-$120 (depending if you get a brand new 1G BOV $80 or a used one from a junkyard $30. Adaptor is about $40 at vendors.)
2. boost gauge- $50 ( autometer)
3. MBC @ 15psi- $50 (Hallman ES or Joe. P)

He bought a 93 so he aleady has a 1G BOV. But a boost gauge should be you first mod. Just follow the tunning guide for help, that is what it is there for.

isnt it a better and safer idea tho to upgrade the fuel pump and isnt the purpose of that mbc, besides to raise boost, to help with the issue of boost creep and spool up time? i had an mbc on my car and when it was set to 16psi it would actually spike around 20-21psi and wham! fuel cut. before itd level of around 16. i think ill go with a ebc

im gonna get a little off topic for a second here, but fuel cut sucks and i hate wisconsin cuz its always cold here and the damn dense cold air was always screwing up my car

this is the ennd of my rant for the day, sorry if i pissed anyone off

You need to find out why you are creeping and fix it. An EBC isnt going to fix it it may just bandaid it. If you are hitting fuel cut them turn the boost down, not very hard. I wouldnt go around telling people to not do things just because cant get my problems sorted out. That doesnt help anyone and starts rumors plus put bad info out there. I dont want to come off as an ass but just post what you KNOW not are guessing.

Yes it would be safer to put a better pump in. That is called a guide not a rule book. If you go with a 255 you shoudl look into getting a fuel pressure regulator. A pump that big has been said to over run the stock FPR. It is a big debate, for what reason I dont know, btu I woudl use a FPR to just be safe.

Let me tell you what i KNOW:

i dont a have problems with the car anymore. why? because the engine is dead. why? because the piston melted. why did the piston melt? because of the lean a/f ratio. why was the a/f lean? because of the damn fuel pump. why was it the fuel pump? because you cant push the pump to its limits and expect everything to be okay, especially if your car has a lot of miles

Ex: if every time you drive your car you take it up to redline and shift, how long is that engine gonna last before you snap a rod? how long before a piston smacks a valve? how long until one of your cams break? how long before ur tranny takes a crap?

if i had a 190lph my engine would still be running, and to top that off the lowest setting on my mbc would still spike around 14-17psi and then fall right away to 10-11. its bs :thumbdown. thats why im getting ebc cuz they dont spike(well:rolleyes: , not nearly as much:thumb: )

i dont mean to sound like an ass either but with 8 months of ripping apart my car and researching what caused the death of my engine, im pretty sure im not taking shots in the dark, so please dont tell me what i do and do not know:thumbdown

ive said my piece and now im done:|

P.S. i forget to mention that my car was completely stock at the time i had a K&N filter and a mbc

First things first. You need to make sure everything is in good condition. Pumps, belts, battery, everything. Then you need to read. A lot. Learn about turbos, how they work, what boost creep is, what spike is, how to port them, why they go bad, how to install one, what lag is, what an acutator is, what a wastegate is, how the exhaust piping affects turbo performance if at all. Learn about bov's, how they work, where they're mounted, what they do. Read about intercoolers, sizes, how to mount one, when you'll need one. Learn about air fuel control and all the different devices, how they work, how to install one, how to set them up. I could go on and on. My point is that you need to learn about every damn component in the car. If you don't know what people are talking about in a thread then do a search on it. When you think you know enough to start modding read some more.

Again, there must have been a problem to begin with that is why maintenance is the firts mod. Like someone in this post and a thousand other have done you can run a decent amount of boost on the stock pump. Should you, probably not, but it can be done and very relaibly at that. My FWD car was runnign 16 lbs on the 14B for a year and a half and never once had a problem. That pump of death lead me to many low 14 second timeslips, California twice, and 18k miles of daily driving. Just becasue your particular situation lead to a bad thing doesnt mean it will for others. A majority of people on this board can run just fine with that pump at decent boost levels. This is what alot of people know, not just me and that why I posted what I did.

Just becasue your car is down doesnt mean that you should take it out on board members we all have the same problems.
