I have a 91 tsi fwd..The timing belt has 2 small splits.I know DONT DRIVE IT!!!I dont have a choice. I will be able to change this weekend but not before. If it breaks whats worse/best....also any differences in turbo/nt head other than the turbo feed line plug? I have very low miles n/t motor. 2nd gen out of a 92.Has horizontal bolts on auto tensioner rather than vertical.Any advice other than the obvious??? Appreciated very much!!!!:talon:

OK...worst case first, your engine internals will rot in hell once you timing belt breaks.

OK...best case, go back and read the first line after the comma.

what do you think now?
i would have to be there to see the slits though.

Why is this a question?:toobad:
Its like saying; I know smoking causes lung cancer, but what are my chances?

Actually its not like saying that at all but Ill make more understandable for you.I know the chances of the belt breaking are pretty goood as are a smokers chances for an early death due to some tar filled nightmare.I am not putting unnecessary stress on it like hole shots or third gear drops at 70.What I as a "NEWBIE" am trying to do is prepare for the worst. As I said before I dont have a choice about driving it right now.....but the sarcasm is appreciated. Small blocks ,timming chains and single cam motors are more predictable...at least to me so thanks for the help"PROVEN MEMBER". Oh and the small gashes are literaly this big "_" and about a foot or so apart. So say a prayer.:D

If they are that big then it should be fine for a bit but don't push it too hard. As for the Newbie/Proven Member stuff, I know I don't really care about it because I know that there are many experts out there who are "wisemen" in the real world but aren't on this board.

Sorry the Newbie/proven member stuff is for thoughs with input that dont actually "put anything in".What about the head off of the 4g63 n/t to 4g63t any differences?
Just in case I get very little piston damage.IF IT BREAKS:cry:

Regardless of someones status on a forum, I doubt anyone on here works in the lab at rubber factory. So I think you realize the answer to your own question. And if the gashes are this big _ , then they are more like scratches right? Maybe you could have said that to begin with. The point is, you realize everyone is going to suggest to you to change it. If you can't, then don't.

AHHHH!!!!I know I need to change the belt...and now that the week is over it will happen. The real question was the damage it could do and what I would be looking at replacing.I also asked about a n/t 4g head and the differences from a turbo head.I know that a broken belt can cause damage. With that said can anybody answer the question about the head????

Well the only visual difference that I can see is that there is a bolt where the turbo line would gWTF!!ther than that they look identical. The other motor is out of a 92 but it is a 2nd gen motor. At least thats my undertanding because of the autotensioner. It was put in the car in 2002 then the kid bottomed out and cracked the bell housing on the tranny.I got it for 600 bucks. The body is mint. Why not.

alright if the timing belt breaks, being they are all interference motors, your valves will slap the pistons and you will be out a new head.....and very rarely it can break the valves off and it can mess up a cylinder...but i havent ever seen on do this

and if it doesnt break your fine

yes there is a N/T 4g63, 1gs have them...

Worst case scenario, you're driving, belt breaks, you need to rebuild your head, and most likely get new pistons.. which means boring/honing yoru block, all new gaskets, seals etc.

Figure you can pick up a used head in decent shape for 300$, new pistons 200$, machine work 200$, gaskets, oil pump etc about 300$. (oh, plus 150$ for the tow)

Best case is if it survives. the week and you replace it. without any damage.

An okay case would be if it breaks and the pistons somehow miracally do not hit the valves... then the only problem is you being stranded.

Ride you bike lest you find yourself $2K poorer

Ok maby 2nd gen is the wrong term.Sorry to confuse two types of auto tensioner right? The block out of the 92 has a tensioner with the mounting holes on either side of itself. The one on my 91 has them on the right side of the tensioner one on top of the other!
