OK here goes: I have a new Buschur motor, less than 1000 miles. Last week I removed the cam gear cover to take a look. Well there are bushings in the cover that the bolts go through and a bushing fell out. Evidently it fell into the timing belt area as that is where I found it looking for the cause of the damaged belt. Was pulling 20 psi and high revs when a IC hose blew off and that jolt caused the weakened belt to lump about 6 teeth. All exhaust valves are bent, rockers fell off as the springs are compressed.
The BIG question here is this. Could the pistons still be good and then I would just need my head repaired with a new belt or could the pistons/bearings need replacing also? The motor spins freely of course since there is no compression.
Guys who have had belts break, what was the damage? [Sales hints redacted] Mark

I have had my belt slip or break plenty of times. I have never had any damage to the pistons other than some dings from the valves. I have never had it happen while under any sort of load though, it was always at idle...

To tell you the truth you really wont know the extent of the damage until you pull the head and take a look.

iv seen holes in pistons before... and like beef said he's were only broken under idle. these cars iv seen ::mom works for mitsu:: were under load. OMG and if the head of one of your valves did break off, kiss your head good bye. cause then it was playing dodge ball in the there. i can show you pictures of what happends to a head when the valve breaks off. :barf:

Pistons are forged wiseco's. I was under load that's for sure! Looked in after removing the plugs and nothing to note there. motor spun and made no noise like something bouncing around but who knows. Less than 1000 miles on a $5k motor! Can the head be pulled with the manifolds left on it? Could do that with my Conquest turbo car. I will call David tomorrow and see what he says. I know the head has to come off. Mark

Damn Mark, that sucks. You can pull the head with both manifold intact. All you need to do is remove the turbo bolts and remove the intake support bracket bolts from the back of the intake. Other than that, everything else is straight forward. Did this happen with the holset?

Yeah and it was starting to run fine. I'll be pulling the inlet tube and checking the comp wheel and of course pulling the head to maSSESS THE DAMAGE, HOPING THE POISTONS ARE INATACT AND THAT THE VALVES ARE JUST BENT, NOT BROKRN OFF. i WILL UOPDATE THE SITUATION. mARK
Sorry for the caps!

Usually. However, there is some suspicion you may have a special knack.
In future automotive fiddling, never figure a part has just gone "away".

Yea, special knack, usually abuse and spend. Never thought the part went away but never considered it fell into the timing belt area. Buschur is hopeful that only the head needs work. I fear the worst. Not usually lucky, Murphy's law seems to have had me in mind! LOL
Still taken in perspective. I've only had 3 back surgeries compared to those who are paralyzed. I live in the good 'ol USA. Have food, shelter and some clothing, etc. Will have the head pulled tomorrow evening. May park the car till next spring! Thankks, Mark

i was under load when my timing belt ate itself. I pulled the head and its 16 bent valves, with one that got so ####ed it snaped in 2! but you have to pull the head, then post some pics. as long as you clean up teh carbon on the pistons, and the cylinder walls arent scuffed, and the pistons arent holed or anythign in that nature, you will be fine. good luck. :thumb:

The pistons came through. Some gouges that will need to be smoothed but otherwise OK. Head is on it's way back to Buschur for rework. Thanks for the support. Mark
