Oh yeah boys and girls it's on!!! I thought for a second that I was ready for this modification, oh really... Ok, maybe not. WHAT A PITA!!! I got everything together to do this and I was feeling good. Keep in mind that all that I had to actually buy was the box and kill switch. I had a stereo in my Jimmy that I got all of my wire and dist blocks/fuses. I'm done except for the actual mounting of the box and putting my car back together. I'm ready to pound about fiddy beers. All in all it's not a difficult job, just a pain. There were a couple of times where I looked like this :mad: . Here's a pic of the initial carnage. :thumb:

have you decided yet where you are going to mount the shutoff switch. I'd like to see pictures of it when you are completely done :)

There's a tech article for it already. I'm thinking about doing another one on it though. The problem with some install articles that they're not detailed enough for the dim of thought, such as myself, for example. ;) My other problem is that I do all of the mods to my car and don't take enough pics. :mad:
 
my friend relocated his battery to the "trunk" in his mirage when he did the swap...hes now doing it to his gsx...we'll have some pics on the site sooner or later
 
Engine bay finished. New stuff done. I ran out of connectors and I can't get any farther till Monday.

All finished up. Everything was a smashing success. Thanks to all that participated in my past three fun filled days. :thumb:

I spent around $180-$190. I was at $160 but I bought those battery terminals. I did everything in about 3 days. If you started early and had all of the parts you could do it in a day. With these cars though, projects don't usually go as planned. ;)

I love my car though. It kicks ass. I found some what I think were Sun Chips under the seat, they were in there when I bought it. :laugh: Pretty nasty. They were almost dust... :laugh: Oh yeah, I fixed the trim in the one pic everything looks decent now. All done, garage cleaned and swept.

Now I think I relocate my oil filter. I'm such a glutton for punishment. :D
 
I am going to try and do this on Sunday... this is what I am going to use


I got a 4 fuse block for the under hood fuses and I have a circut braker for back by the batt... no do I really need to fuse the starter and alternator... I dont think it is on the car anyway is it?

But I was looking that the VFaq way of doing it and they dident even use the fuse block for the Fan and MPI and stuff....

And Can I get better pics of where you went into the car with the wire. I was trying to go into the big wire harness loom but I couldent find the wire on the other side.

Hahha.... I am also going to relocate my oil filter... hahaha
 
I'm in the process of removing my hvac unit as well. I ran my wire through where the hvac drain is. That way I can use part of the hvac plastic as a grommet. If that's not an option for you, you can drill through the firewall and run your wire that way. If you do this make sure that you pick up a grommet to protect your wire from scraping against the metal. That would be very bad... :laugh: You would look like this :mad: if that happens.
 
So where is a safe location to drill... I am always afraid to drill into something that I shouldent be drilling into... hahha
 
The biggest thing is to go where there's no chance of hitting any wires. When you pull the carpet back and double check the engine bay, you should have a good idea where you want to drill. The biggest thing that I can tell you is to make sure that you've got a good grommet to protect the wire. Other than that, it's a piece of cake.

For a fwd car there's no point in doing this as you need all the weight that you can get for traction. For a awd car, this modification makes for better weight distribution and improved handling. :D
 
It matters some on any car. It's not just the weight, it's where the weight's not only coming from, but going to as well. Although on a DSM with the engine hanging out in front of the engine, not as much as on some cars.

I'm in the process of relocating my battery on my 90' AWD and have a few questions with regards to the 4 way distribution block and fuses to use.

On my car there are 3 PAL fuse, do I have to find a distribution block with the same PAL fuse design or can I use the maxi style fuse?

This is the one that I am thinking of using for my car, would it work?

Can we get some more people who have relocated their battery to post some diagrams/drawings as to how they wired their setup. I've read different things about battery cutoff and alternator cutoff and was wondering if some people actually ran two wires to the back of the car. I'm obviously no good at doing electrical work, and currently have my battery relocated without a cutoff switch and new fuse blocks - it's done pretty half assed and I want to fix it and do it right. But I need to see some diagrams - I'm a visual guy.

Stacy, I read your install article as well. Good write up. If you had a drawing in there for tards like me, it would be perfect. I'm still not quite sure on how to choose the correct fuse block. I found some on crutchfield by StreetwWires, but I'm not sure they'll work for my application. I ran 2 gauge wire for my battery, so I assume I'll need a fuse block that can handle that gauge wire. Do all 3 fuse blocks need to be for 2 gauge? Help on choosing those would be appreciated.

Also, anyone have any ideas for a stealthy placement for the cutoff switch on a 1ga (91 Eclipse)? I was thinking in one of the reverse light spots or behind the license plate.
 
Hey Chris. I don't have a diagram, sorry about that. It's been a while since I sold my car. ;) Oh well, we all make mistakes.

But as for the blocks, as long as they'll accept the 2 ga. wire they should be fine for what you're doing. I'm sure that Street Wires has you covered.

I just hooked up everything that was hooked up to the battery to the 4 way block. There were 2 white wires that I put together into 1 spot on it. The other 3 I put in there own spots. My 4 way block also had 3 outs for larger wires, you don't really need 3, but at least get a block that has 2.

I ran the factory power wire to the starter (Black / Red stripe) to the other block and then from the single block, I ran wire back into to the 4 way. Then, from the 4 way to the back of the car.

Now that you have the wire in the back of the car, run it to the last single fuse block. Run wire from your block to one of the posts on the kill switch, I forget if these have +/- symbols on them or not, but anyways, run wire from the other post to the positive terminal on the battery. Now run your ground from the negative terminal of your battery to the chassis, I used the child seat bolt.

One thing I forgot to add is, if you've done a fuel pump rewire, now is a good time to hook the positive from that to the kill switch as well. This will help you cut fuel at the track in the event something bad happens.

As for switch placement Chris, I have a friend that did just that, he put his right next to the license plate.

I hope this helps clear up any confusion, sorry I didn't take more pics. I'm just sorry when it comes to taking pics when I'm in the middle of something. I did however update my tech article with more pics and info. I'll try and write up a diagram as well.
