I was wondering what the main benifits are of removing the balancing shaft?

Search "balance shaft removal" or "balance shaft elimination"
That should answer your questions

It gives you peace of mind that your balance belt wont pop and ruin your timing belt and damage your cylinder head.
It also frees up horse power because thats one less thing that the crank has to turn.

Pros
1.Don't have to worry about the belt taking out the timing belt.
2.Frees up some power due to less rotating mass

Cons
1. Added vibration to in the car
2. High oil pressure
