How can i tell if my BS is seized up? The engine won't crank, the timing belt barely tries to move but doesn't get far. Symptoms of it going out while driving? I'm trying to figure out if the BS in my 91 talon is out or if the whole engine is dead.

Take the front cover off like you would to do a timing belt job and remove both the timing belt and then balanace shaft belt and see if you can move it. Should take you just an hour or so to determine.

I agree. This will be the quickest way to find out if its the balance shaft or something worse. Keep us posted.

If it is what seized would that explain why the engine won't crank? Also when the car finally died on the side of the road it smoked like a chimney.

It could be one of the balance shafts seized up, an oil pump seized up, or even the crank or a spun rod. Sounds like you got it pretty hot. Once you get the belts off the front of the engine you will be able to determine what all will turn freely. Then you will know what actually seized. And yes, a seized balance shaft would cause it to not crank.
