Balance shaft leaking oil/metal shavings

I went to look at a 1g Tsi today for $5oo. Its got a brand new rebuilt engine. It is leaking oil and metal shavings from the balance shaft.... Will it need a full rebuild or just BSE kit? Thx!

I'm confused....balance shafts aren't visible unless you can see inside the engine, and there's LOTS of oil in there.

The front case is covered in oil, seems to be coming from the area of tge balance shaft belt. The balance shaft belt is broken too. The guy said it would start of I wanted too see the leak. I declined, until I know more.

I could see if it was leaking oil but if the guy is saying something about metal shavings.....idk.

Dude.. $500 that's a no brainer, buy it and get it home and figure out what problems it has. If it cost to much for you to fix, part it out and make double your money back. Win, win.

I wouldn't run the engine in that condition.

It sounds like the the oil pump has failed due to the oil pump drive gear gouging the inside of the front case where it is mounted and allowing oil to pass through. I would start by pulling the oil pump and inspect all of the components against factory specs.

I am for sure buying the car. I have a spare stock engine with less then 100k on it. Car is clean inside and out. SO its coming home with me for sure. The guy had 4k in receipts for a VERY recent complete rebuild. Pistons, rods, bearings, the whole thing. I am very comfortable and familiar with these cars, tho not 1g's. This will be my 6th Dsm, my 1st 1g. Just never heard or seen something like this before. I could see the oil had leaked with metal shavings in it. The guy im buying it from only knows how to spend money having someone else do the work so he is clueless. I'm hoping this fresh rebuild isnt ruined !

It is ruined. Some parts may be salvageable, but its a good bet every bearing surface inside the engine needs repair. Buy it as a project, not for the recent rebuild.

I agree with talondsmerr. That motor is done if the belt broke, oil is leaking and metal shavings that's just asking for trouble!! pull the motor drop your spare in and go from there!!
