ok i have a new factory balance shaft belt, and i have everything apart to change it. Hear is my problem. Iwhen i took the waterpump off i turned the balanceshaft gear and i have no idea if it is right on or 180 degrees off. is there any way to tell? i pulled the bolt in the back of the block and i know the oil pump is right on, and the cams are at tdc, and so is the crank. I just really need to find out how to make sure the balance shaft is at TDC aswell as the rest of the parts.

hear is a picture.

ps car is a 1990 Eagle talon TSI AWD. with 147k. and no im not going to do the balanceshaft elemination kit or leave the belt off i want it to be done right.

thanks

options for you from best to worst...

#1.....balance shaft elimination kit.......now that is the way to have it done right.

#2....leave the belt off. ive done this 2 both of my awd's and to a 4g63 powered galant. No problems whatsoever and i dont even notice any increased vibration at all.

#3....Put the new belt on. I wouldnt reccomend that you put a belt in there in the first place as I have read a lot of post where people's balance shaft belt rips and takes out the timing belt with it. I would not even put a new belt either.

well i made a thread a while back and asked if i should actaully remove them or not. and the responce from the people with good reps and lots of posts was to keep the balance shaft and change the belt and pulley. stating that it is very uncomon for that belt to rip and break if it is changed at the right times. and im ganna be selling the car so i don;t want to just leave a belt out.

i just need some help on how to figure out if the gear is right on or 180degrees off.

thanks

ps for some reason the pic isn't showing up for me so ill repost it hear.

The front shaft is direct-drive, and cannot be 180° out. The rear is driven by the oil pump gear, and can be.

I checked with one of my professors at school, and he called a budy that was still working in the field and said the same. thing. so the font balanceshaft gear can be rotated as many times, as long as the timing mark is lined up. :rocks:

so hopefully i can get this car back on the road after this weekend if i can afford to get a new idler pulley.

thanks for the help :thumb:
