I just replaced the timing and balance belts, but I had to tear it all apart again to replace leaking camshaft seals.

When I put the new balance belt tensioner pulley on I put the lip on the inside like vfaq says to do for 95 7-bolts, but I noticed that it kind of deflected the belt. Now it is causing wear of the belt and it is shredding the side of the balance belt. See the dark furry spots? thats b belt.

What shoudl I do?

Replace the pulley with what exactly?

Well regardless, I think I'll take the pulley off, grind off the huge lip and turn it around the other way.

Turned around it shouldn't deflect the belt and with the lip ground off should clear the tensioner.

Wonder if you got that pulley a bit on the slanted side when you tightened it down to cause the belt to run towards the inside and eat itself against the flange?

Was the pulley flange on the outside or the inside when you first did the belts? It could be okey to run the flange on the outside so that way the belt ride more center of the pulley.

Make sure you ONLY use factory pulley and belt. Aftermarket all cause problems and if you used one that IS your problem. Compare (measure everything) factory one to yours VERY carefully - subtle differences make all the difference - example, height of center hub is sometimes different on aftermarket and has been known to cause problems even though you'd think it shouldn't matter. Also only use the one for the 95, other years are slightly different.

Did you change all your timing belt items, and is it all oem stuff? Re do it if you have to then try it again, i had a loose oil sprocket nut that wasnt tight caused my belt to fray like that.

I was looking in Chilton's on the pulley arrangement for the 2G motors and it looks like the flange on the balancer pulley is to be on the outside, not inside.

Agreed. Although i have a 1g so my flange is on the outside, it makes no sense to put it on the inside. The flange keeps the belt from slipping off??? are you sure you bought a 2g bs pulley?

Disclaimer: I do not condone the use of "aftermarket" timing parts and I do not suggest the approach to a timing job used in this thread. Your automotive maintenance should be performed by a professional mechanic.

With that said, here's what I got:

-ground down the newer balance belt tensioner with my die grinder till the lip was just a little bigger than the old one.
-got a new "aftermarket" balance belt
-installed tensioner with lip on the outside.

I got stuff mostly back together and rotated the crank like 20 times. The belts and pulleys seem to be good. So basically I turned an aftermarket 2gb tensioner into a 2ga tensioner.

Same as mine, plus 4G37 motors have them outside as well.

Guess the answer to what is done above is: "just have to wait and see if it works or not, and if it does work without any problems, that's a plus in your favor."

Question: was the fuzz residue - was that from the outside edge of the belt, or the inside edge. If it was the outside edge, the results came from the belt snagging on the timing cover.

The only danger that I can see with grinding down the flange to almost flush is that the balance belt is to be slightly more looser than the main belt due to the much shorter belt length. Thus, the BS belt has more of a change of going over the front edge since the BS sprocket has no flange on it to hold the belt in place durning the travel, and there is serious RPM's spinning the balance sprocket - twice as fast as crank RPM's.

Yes, cranking it over manually 20 times looks okey, but we have to wait and see how it does when under actual operating conditions.

Good luck - DSM

The "fuzz residue" was coming from the inside of the belt.

I agree that with the front bs shaft spinning so fast the alignment of the belt is important.

But the lip on the old pulley was smaller and that lasted for 50K miles.

BTW the crank sprocket provides belt guidance on both sides of the belt, so that helps.

I'll try to remember to post if my my modification causes any problems.

Thanks to everyone for the advice

you might end up with a slight vibration coming from that tensioner you ground down, due to the fact that its now out of balance from grinding it by hand.
