So my 6 bolt swap in my 99 GST has been done since early this year and seen a good +6,000 miles. I bult a 6 bolt, 2G pistons on 1G rods, all arps, crower valve springs and retainers, ferrea SS valves. Its been flawless the entire time, well was... So the other night I was driving home from dinner and I notice a belt squeel. I knew the PS belt was a bit loose so I figured it was that. As I drove further it started smoking a bit, but very very lightly. I pulled over and looked around. It seemed the AC belt was the reason and I figured the tensioner (since it had been left in the parts washer too long) was causing the problems in conjunction with the belt. I figured home was only 5-10 more minutes and I could deal with it the next day. 1-2 miles down the road and the car stumbles on it self, breaks up and cuts off. Then boom, the loudest backfire ive ever heard and it dies. I open the hood and the timing cover is soo hot its almost melted, rip it off and the belts shredded to hell!
So my perfect motors trashed due to a timing belt failure, with 5-6K on it... im just a tad bit heated at the moment.
I pulled the head today and as expected lots of fun stuff. The rockers were all knocked and fell down into the head, the cams are chewed up nicely...thank god they were stockers. Once the head was off yup all 16 Ferrea's were bent and there were 16 nice imprints in my new 2G pistons.
So my best guess is this... the rear timing cover (wing) on the head. It has 2 10mm's that hold it on and are there to PREVENT stuff from going in are at this point MIA. My best guess is they decided to meet up with my timing belt and had some fun. So in that case I will be very lock tight happy in the future on those.
I need your guys honest opinions at this point. Do i smooth out the pistons and redo the head or do I replace the pistons. Im anal for perfection and its going to bother me that they are not right but I really would rather be driving my 99 GST around daily then my F350 Quad Cab dually
. In the case I need to I can replace the pistons but if it would work out to just leave them in there I will.
Also if I am to take out the pistons would it be safe to reuse my 6K old bearings and rings or should they be relpaced again as well?
P
Thanks in advance!
