car intermittently sputters out, then the tech hits zero, then the car back fires. Today i caught it on dsm link and i noticed that when it happens the car reads like 10,000 plus rpms at like either 40 or 5 degrees of timing even though im either idling or going like 30, does this sound like a cas or transistor pack or maybe coil pack? thanks i figured since it was intermittent it might be something else, why wouldn't it happen all the time? thanks

Having the exact same issue essentially. Mine will start sputtering as soon as it gets warmed up (120+ degrees) and eventually just die and not start until it cools down. Luckily I've got 3 AWD 90's to swap parts between I can narrow mine down. So far I've only had time to swap coilpacks which didn't fix it. My Ecmlink logs go haywire when this occurs.

i was having this same problem i changed plugs, wires, and coil packs and still didn't fix the problem so the last option was to change the cam angle sensor.

Mine did something similar a while ago, and it ended up being a loose connection to the harness connector on the coil pack, picked up a harness and pigtail from the junkyard, and never had it again.

I also have had a CAS fail too, it did sputter quite badly, but never had my tachometer flutter as you are describing.
