ok i just got my 97 gst a couple days ago, now. i usually cut the rod on my other cars, so im thinking the same on this gst, what do u guys think? and how low should i cut it? thanks :thumb:

dont cut it, Just spend the 155 and get the B&M all others are junk, the B&M actually works. I am pretty sure most people here would agree and a search on B&M shifter will yeild positive proof. Just stay away frfom the cheap brands and for the love of DSMs, stay away from ghetto mods. "mod cheap mod twice"

I agree, cutting the shifter doesnt actually shorten the throw. Spend the money to get a real short shifter if you want one.

A cutoff shifter lever won't shorten the throw, but it does shorten the distance you have to throw, while reducing your leverage.

But yeah, bite the bullet and get the B&M. They're drop-dead gorgeous, and although it's kind of a lot of money, they're just about worth it.

Swap out your transmission fluid to Pennzoil Synchromesh, too.

this is a liittle off subject, but where do you put this synchromesh in? And does it help with shifting? Mine is a little choppy from 2-3, and 3-4. Thanks a lot

It all depends on you . Do you want a shorter throw? then yes get the b&M. But if you like the shift points and want to make the shifter a lil shorter then cut it. I cut mine about 1.5 inches and looks great and works the balls to>>>>>

You're not. But Pennzoil/Quaker State is the same product as GM- not similar, but the same. Has the GM part # on the bottle.
BG is also well thought of, it's a good product.

cutting does shorten the throw.. all a short shifter does is extend the bottom half of the shifter... the same effect as cutting the top off, but you can only cut but so much ;) definitly got with a new shifter..

The DSM short-throw shifters also raise the pivot point for the fore-aft motion of the lever, making for the short throw. Cutting the upper lever will reduce how far your hand moves on a shift, but it doesn't actually affect the "throw" going on at either the shifter base or the transmission, granted it's a distinction without a lot of difference. B&Ms have two attachment points on the bottom of the arm, one for a 35% reduction (which feels like a LOT) and one for a 50% (which must make _everything_ else you drive feel like a '54 Crown schoolbus).
I've read repeatedly of the OBX and PaceSetter shifters needing machine work to fit, overshifting, and breaking. The B&M (at triple the price) hasn't been criticized.

I'm glad this topic was brought up b/c i am about to install my B&M short throw shifter VERY soon and wanted to know what you all suggest on the throw reduction...should i go 35 or 50 percent??? its not seeing any track time or racing , but i will get on the car a little here and there (just cruising).

yes i know this, but what you said makes no sense LOL.. you said "cutting the upper lever will reduce how far your hand moves on a shift, but it doesnt actually affect the throw at either the shifter base or teh transmission".. i know, it effects the throw above that! thats what a short throw shifter does.. note: "short throw" it works either way, shortening the lenght above the pivot or extending the length below the pivot.. or both..

i would go ahead and try 50% throw and see how ya like it!

i cut about 2 inches off my shifter then welded the thread back on. i love it. i mainly did it because i couldnt find a shortshifter for a 1 g at the time. i have no regrets and it was free

Just finished my B&M , took about an hour, most of that hour was being careful while taking hte aftermarket Head Unit out and the T.T. and trim (very fragile). Install was a peice of cake, i love how B&M tailors their instructions to work out just right on your car along with very good diagrams. I did go with the 50% throw, even without driving the car yet it feels MUCH better then before, 1st gear even seems like it won't be a problem getting into now....I love it!

penzoil synchromesh is good, ass good as the GM, as for a short throw, get the B&M, dont get that cheap OBX and other nonsense crap.. youll regret it.

I want to get a short throw shifter, but am having trouble deciding which brand to go with. I've heard a lot of pro-B&M comments in this thread, but what about Symborski?

they are metal washer that make the shifter more percise and accurate

Symborski+B&M short shifter= best 5 speed

i do have to say thats one thing i have noticed with my car since i've had it that i dont like, the throws are ridiculous, my primary vehicle is my s10... a pickup truck, and the shifts feel more like a "short throw" then my laser, everytime i shift in the laser i expect to hear bells/whistles and flashing "jackpot" lights

Your S-10 shifter is going straight into the gearbox, not working some cables like the transmission's a damned marionette. You'll work long to try and get a DSM to feel close to that.... and close is as near as you'll get.
