In my opinion the price that you can pick up some TSi's and GSX's now, it may be worth it to just buy the car outright. With all the involved labor, and parts searching, then hoping it's as reliable it may be worth it to try to find one.
I've seen mint 1G's around here for less than $1000 at times.

It's always cheaper to start with an AWD car, considering the cost of DSMs now I honestly don't know why people waste their time with FWD shitboxes. The only people that do AWD conversions are complete retards or they have some kind of attachment to their FWD car...
