Average cost to rebuild a head?

I'm trying to get some quotes locally of how much it should cost to get my head redone, but I don't know if I'm getting shafted when someone tells me "yeah, we could do that for $300".

All I want to know is what it's going to cost to get the valvetrain reworked. I'll be doing all the work of getting it off the car and dismantled, I just want to drop the head off with the valves/springs/retainers -or whatever else I can't do without specialized tools- and pick it up when they're done and put it back on the car.

What would be a reasonable cost for this kind of work?

you can get good Crower springs and retainers for about 260$ .. I would get new seals too wich are 50$ for the 16......and valves are 8$ a pop i beleive and you need 16so if you want to do it right its gonna cost about 600 bucks or so ... plus labor...You could do it yourself its not hard..just make a Valve spring compressor as seen on vfaq.com

a local machine shop did a resurface and complete valve job for $340.

No one here can tell you for sure. We dont the condition of the head. I have seen a good head be rebuilt for 250.00 and a bad head get rebuilt for a bit under 600.00. The one that needs more parts will cost more. I had mine done locally for 320.00, but it needed a few valve guides.
