I'm thinking atleast a 32 gallon cell in the hatch connected to the main tank via a racing electronic pump I have sitting around from a carbed domestic I used to run..

Its a 1250 mile run...

32 gallons of fuel is gonna weigh like 200lbs... plus however much is in the main tank.

So you are gonna run off the main tank and cell at the same time through a y-block, or are you gonna used a pneumatic solenoid to switch from the main tank to the cell whenever you please? Also, how are you looking to run the return line? And how do you plan on keeping the E85 out of the main tank between switching from the main tank to the cell from the return line? I'm going to be doing the same setup soon, and was wondering what your plans are.

200# is Not a problem with coil overs with DGs recomended spring rate... STIFF...

Also driver only...

It did'nt seem to mind two heads and a disasembled short block all at once a while back....

Probably about 48 gals total..

Next.

Um this is way simple...

Just like having spare cans in the back...

Just a hose from the bottom of the cell to the main tank....

main tank....
I meant that means you'll be increasing the weight of your car (semi-permanently) by 200lbs. It's not like you were daily-driving (or racing) for months or years with 2 heads and a shortblock in your trunk.

So let me get this straight.....

You want to purchase, install, and plum a fuel cell in your 2G, just to save $20 in fuel for a roadtrip?
Yeah exactly.. this seems weird. I'm sure you could do it, but why? It'd be expensive and a big hassle with minimal gains.

Carb'd fuel systems work at very low PSI that fuel pump probaly won't even start your car.

My thoughts exactly. Spending 40-50 bucks to save 40-50 bucks doesn't add up especially when you factor in the time and energy. On top of this E85 has a stoich of about 10:1, I believe, so when you switch tanks you will have to retune. You will also have to use more E85 to make the same power than regular gas.

Well he could later down the road fill it up with 32 gallons of methanol. :sneaky:
BTW has anybody tried E85 on a DSM yet.(most likely, but what happend?)

Yes its just like this trip.. Set cruise controll 98% of the way... Get there and unload...

A passenger is a semi-permenent 200# or more... and in this case there are none..

As for cost I already have the cell. Its a moller plastic rectangular boat cell I got for free...

I could get 6 5gallon cans or twin 15gal race jugs instead but given the ease of access to the tank from under the seat I thought I'd make things slick by installing a T at the main tank and not to have to worry about tiping the cans at the filler neck and plumb an external vent. I wont have to roll 25hrs smelling of gasohol...

Um..... You are'nt tracking... The carb pump is just a transfer pump... Moves from auxillary to the main tank.

The rest of the fuel system is already in place.

In tank pump moves it to a small cell up front used as a surge tank.. The size used for N20 enrich fuel by some domestic racers... I never washout a pickup in corners or off the line and I dont have to run -10 all the way up front... Thats why I did that. Then a large SX inline pump pulls from the cell and pressurizes the fuel system and its 1680cc injectors...

Might wanna read ppls mod lists?

Lets see if I know something about tuning for ethanol blends..

Hey look I do!

I have ran the car on E85 for a few years now..

Um I'm using more E85 to make MORE power than regular gas...

So I'm spening 0 bucks to save 40-50bucks and time.... Plus it makes it easier with E85 station logistics.

http://afdcmap.nrel.gov/Website/Stations/viewer.htm

Select only E85 and that is all that will show up on the map of the US... Look at the forest of green trees (E85 fills) in MN
Over 200 sites...

Route planner

There is just a 600mile stretch with little in the way of stations and some are a bit off the interstate... However here in MN they are like every other block.. At my destination where I will be for a while.. (otherwise I'd fly) there are a handfull but all are very close..

Get there.. Pull the tank and my bags... UPS is moving the bulk of my long term gear..

Basically I'll just be running the weight of a driver and two PAX... Once settled in and unloaded... The same # as normal..

I'd say if you have everything why not, its just time. But I would be leary of putting 32 gallons of flamable liquid in the trunk.

Be careful, it is illegal in some states to have a new gas tank put in without getting the car re inspected. If you get pulled over and the cop smells gas, he might ticket/tow you. And you know when your driving through the middle of nowhere, cops have nothing to do .

That's exactly what I was thinking....I know here in Texas, you could definitely get hassled for that if the cop saw/smelled gas.

But.....logistically, I don't see a problem with what you're describing. It'd be a fun experiment, at any rate.....

I know all about that..

I have had them drive 5 miles up the opposite side of the hwy to a turn around and come back closing 20 miles in the time I went 10 just to say that they pulled me over because of out of state plates.

Thats when I was doing 55-60.. It puts their speed at 110-120 mph.

I'm leaning towards just using a few 5 or 6 gallon cans and making a refuel stop..
