my transmission won't shift after i hit 40 mph. the engine revs but it won't shift. if i shift from "D" to "2" then i can shift to 2nd with no problems. the car has 90k miles on it. is it possible this problem is caused by anything besides the transmission going out? also are there any potential problems from my changing gears just by shift from "D" to "2"? lastly, will i be harming my car by just driving it the way it is [below 40 mph] ? thanks for any help.

thanks a lot doug. that makes a lot of sense because i found today that if i turn off the overdrive then i can drive normally. i will be changing this ASAP. thanks again so much.

i purchased the alto kit you posted about doug, however i'm not sure that is the answer. however, for prevention purposes i still wanted to get it. is it possible that the problem could be cause by a failing transmission control module? this is something that i have asked about in other forums and a couple people said to consider it as well. any help is appreciated.

Your TCU is more than likely fine. Rarely do they go out. End clutch would be your first suspect.

two weeks later everything is fixed, it was indeed the end clutch. i had a broke seal. thanks again for your help doug.
