Sometimes, when I bring my car to a stop, it feels like the automatic doesnt shift down to the first gear, instead it feels like it is starting from second gear. Other times, I can feel it starting off from first gear.

what could cause this or is this normal?

I don't think that is normal. My car shifts pretty good. One thing to do with your automatic is get a shift kit and an end clutch kit.

Get the TCU checked. When I used to have my 3G Eclipse, I just had the get the TCU checked. Do you have any CEL lit up? As far as the cause, that is just unknown. How long has this happened for?

I just purchased the car and didnt realize the problem when I test drove it. what is a TCU? it only has 64k miles on it

TCU is the Transmission Control Unit other words the Tranns computer. is your check engine light on?

no check engine light, the trans usually shifts fine. Sometimes when I come to a stop, it starts out in first gear.....othertimes it starts out in second gear. Other than that it shifts perfect.
It is a 98 GS-T spyder

The fluid is perfect

odd then, fluid checks out ok then? when if known was the last fluid/filter change?

I am not sure when the last fluid change was. I guess I can try that. Fluid may be a little low. I checked in warm in nuetral and it is right at the line between cold & hot. Is it supposed to be up in the "hot" section

You need to complete your profile. Defiant's question assumed you are driving a 1G and your answer indicates a 2G. What we have here is a failure to communicate.

Mine used to do this just before it stopped moving except in reverse (end clutches) does it ever rev without moving then when you let the revs down shift into a gear? Does it buck really hard when you shift from reverse to drive? All of these were symptoms of my end clutches being worn completely away. With only 60kish they shouldn't be too bad unless someone has been revving your car then slamming it into drive to spin the wheels.

mine does this too sometimes....exactly how yours is doin...EXACTLY as your sayin...152,000 other than the not downshifting it runs and drives fine...never slips....honestly I wrote it off as the stock high stall....

This sounds like the 1-2 shift valve is sticking. It could be doing that because of dirty fluid or the valves could have had dirt in them and it created a bur or a scratch on the valves causing it to stay in second gear instead of downshifting to first when you are stopped. I've rebuilt maybe 2 or 3 transmission and the first one had that problem, but they were older transmission turbo 350's to be specific. I would say change the fluid and filter and see what happens. If that doesnt fix the problem then i would look for a valve body or get your valve body rebuilt by a transmission shop.

ok well how about this....not tryin to jack the op's thread but me and him are having VERY similiar issues....mine shifts to first at a stop once being driven but when coming from reverse or park when I first start driving it it does the not wanting to shift into first thing....fluid is perfect and good color....??

almost exactly same issues here. im about to check out my end clutch, i'll fill in on how it's doing after a while.

honestly I think it isnt that big of a deal cause other than that the tranny works amazing Im just ordering a roadsurge shiftbox because I feel that 100% line pressure will alieviate the issue almost completely...not to mention it will increase longevity of the clutches...ill let you know how it goes once I get it installed.:talon:

Im going to change my fluid and filter and will let everyone know how it works out

I changed the fluid and filter and it is still not shifting to first sometimes. Might just take it to a tranny shop and have them look at it
