The shifter dots never seems to line up with P-R-N-D....Anyone have experience with this?

I've delt with it for a while just feeling for whatever gear I'm looking for, but now I'm having trouble getting it park. I'll hit the top of the gear shifter range and it sometimes it goes in park and sometimes reverse (not good). I've tried to mess with the cable end, but I'm just guessing on how to fix it.

1. Set the selector lever to the "N" (Neutral) position.
2. Loosen the control cable to manual control lever coupling adjusting nut to free the cable and lever.
3. Set the manual control lever to the neutral position.
4. Loosen and adjust the park/neutral position switch body. Then the hole in the end of the manual control lever and the hole in the flange of the park/neutral position switch body must be aligned.
5. Tighten the park/neutral position switch body mounting bolts to the specified torque. Be careful at this time that the position of the switch body is not changed.
6. Lightly pull the transaxle control cable in the arrow's direction, and tighten the adjusting nut to the specified torque.
7. Check that the selector lever is in "N" position.
8. Check that each range on the transaxle side operates and functions correctly for each position of the selector lever.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

my 98 spyder is an auto transmission it goes into park - neutral- reverse but never the other gears. could that be the same reason its my first spyder eclipse so i know nothing about it please help!!

Does it have 3rd (one forward gear)?
If the transmission computer see's anything funny it will go into "LIMP" mode and only allow P, R, N & D.
If it has NO forward gears then I am scratching my head ( and getting bald......).
