auto transmission help!!

hey guys this is my first dsm and i really need some help,i just got the car from the docks and on the drive home i was doing about 80 mph then all of a sudden i heard the rpm go up but it wasnt going anywhere,so i stopped turned it off and it worked again for about 20 feet did the same thing i couldnt go over 20 mph without it going out of gear finally i was home i checked to fluid level it was good but the fluid smells like its burnt my mechanic checked the transmission and everything good he said it looks like it was just rebuilt so he said it may be the torque converter but idk can somone please help.!!! btw its a 97 gst spyder turbo

Have you tried driving it an Low range instead of Drive?
Change the fluid (if haven't done so in a while) and see if it still messes up. If the new fluid gets a "burning" smell then thansmission needs to be worked on. If it stays nice and red, replace the torque converter.
I'm not a pro mechanic, but that is what i would do if i have that problem.

If it smells burnt, trust me you need a rebuild. I JUST blew the trans in my 97 not even 3 days ago. The fluid was dark and smelled horrible.

when i reached home it wouldnt drive in anything it worked a bit in reverse though, some one else told me it could be a speed sensor, or tcm could it be 1 of those?

It needs to be rebuilt. Burnt fluid is a telltale sign.

How difficult is it to replace clutches in the tranny? or is there more to rebuild than just that?

ok would i have to change the torque converter as well?
