i have a 97 gst spyder and it's not going in any of the gears so we took down the transmission and everything looked fine my mechanic says it looks like it has just been rebuilt we are thinking it may be the torque converter but idk could this be a electrical prob? btw the fluid smells burnt :(

Did you try pulling the codes from the TCU (transmission control unit). It should give you an idea what the problem is if it is electrical.

I would also suggest looking at the forums on the IPT (Import Performance Transmission) website. They are masters with DSM autos and they have hundred of pages of questions and answers like yours. You will probably be able to find your answer there alot easier than here.

AutoDSM is another group that has some forums, but not as extensive as IPT. Good luck.

i didnt try to pull any codes we just took it down the same day i know it's my fault :/ should i just put back up everything?

You might have to at least connect the trans to sensors to pull codes. I am not 100% on that as I have never tried it. Have you looked at the IPT site for answers? You can't find a better place for DSM Auto trans forums. Does it sound like it is trying to shift at all?

yess i think soo sometimes it would some time it even moves but asoon as u reach 15 or 20 mph the rpms go up but the car does not move

yea it smells burnt it like it's slipping, but u wont believe how clean the transmission is inside we dropped the pan no shavings just clean

You just get the car? Maybe the last owner put some new stuff in there to try to crutch it along a bit and clean out the dirt from it going south. You would more likely have debris from the clutch plates and not metal shavings if the trans overheated. I think its time for a rebuild with new clutch sets. Did you look at the IPT forums yet?

Smells burnt - clutches in the tranny are smoked.

Either you let the thing run too hot and the fluid wasn't flowing too well with a radiator that needed to be boiled out being so full of crud and gunk, or have the wrong fluid placed in.

DSM turbo trannies needs ATF+4, or SP-II or III fluids.

Overheating could have come from a number of things. I agree it could have been the reasons 1g stated, but if you have been brake boosting at lights, it can raise the temps pretty quick if you are going light to light, or just practicing without giving it time to cool down. The number one enemy of automatic transmissions is heat. You can combat heat in a couple ways, the most effective are:

A shift kit. Sounds strange that harder shifts would be better for the transmission, but it results in less slippage, less heating of the fluid and less debris and wear from the clutch plates.

An external transmission cooler. (This is an easy one).

IPT has all of this on there site and more with a lot more detail. No I do not work for them. I do not get a kick back from them, although it would be nice. I do live in the same state as there garage. I have purchased parts from them and spoke with them over the phone. Great people. I would recommend the to anyone.

ok cool i wasnt brake boosting but i understand exactly what u guys are saying so i need to change the end clutches?

If your lucky, swapping in a new end clutch will work, but there are a couple sets of clutch packs in there. The end clutch is the easiest to change and it can be done through the passenger side wheel well. IPT make a 5 disk end clutch that is supposed to hold 20 to 25 percent more power. I think Kiggly makes a similar kit (probably made by the same company and marked by both). You could give it a shot, hopefully you get lucky and your good to go.

I found the link for the IPT end clutch kit for you.

End clutches are for the OD only, whereas you mention no shifting totally - which can point to the entire tranny needs rebuilt due to the inner clutches needs replaced..or the tranny pump died.

I've seen TC's do this as well in which the need replacing. Either way, that tranny needs to come out and checked.

Tranny pump? Do you mean the torque converter?
