auto to manual cams

Ok boys. Just in case you didn't see my last post let me update you and tell you I'm starting a 13g auto project. You can check that post out here:

So basically that's the game plan, but I have a few questions about the cams. I have heard many say that the manual cams are slightly better than the auto cams, but say it's not worth the time. In my haynes manual it states that the following:

Auto cam's lobe height: Intake: 1.3858 Exhaust: 1.3974
Manual cam's lobe height: Intake: 1.3974 Exhaust: 1.3858

Well as of right now, I got most of the engine bay taking apart. The belts aren't on, so all I would have to do to do the swap is pop off my valve cover and do it. This leaves me with 2 questions. First being, wouldn't it be better if i just swap out the intake cams instead of both? That makes more sense to me because that gives me the biggest lobe height on both sides. So is there a reason people say go with both manual cams? Then my second question is, when I do this, will there be anything more to do than just slap the cams in and line up the timing marks? Well hope someone can give me the proper feedback. Thanks guys.
 
Not worth the trouble to swap to another stock camshaft, spend a few bucks and get a set of performance cams you will thank yourself later.

Wouldn't you rather just upgrade instead of just midgrade?

Ok, well the normal choice is 272's. The problem with this is most say if you aren't running over so much flow it's pointless to upgrade your cams, and sometimes it can just hurt your performance. Since I am trying to max out the 13g's potential, I'm scared I'm going to hurt the horsepower more than help it. Is there a smaller cam that 272 that I could use that would be ideal for the 13g. Also do you think a cyclone intake would be worth while on a 13g?
 
Big camshafts would kill your daily drive-ability but there are great cams out there that will allow you to run all stock componants, and increase your throttle response, torque, and HP.

Search the 264's and 272's if you have a heavy right foot.

Are perfect for most setups... Even with a T25 i noticed some good gains from them with no "killed effects"

Those who say they're not for daily drivers are the same people that cry about motor mounts :rolleyes:...

FP / Kelford/ HKS , cant go wrong with them
 
Chances are with a 13g turbo, you will likely make your peak hp somewhere between 5-6k. This is still within the realm of efficiency for the stock cams in my opinion. If you were to buy something, maybe get a set of 264 regrinds from Delta or something like that.
I would keep the 264/FP1,etc as max with that turbo, because they will increase power throughout the whole rpm band and are good for your usable powerband.

The stock duration is 256, so jumping to a 264 or 272, I don't think it would hurt a bit now. I would probably want to stick with the 264's though since I think they will most likely give me good low and midrange. Now all I have to do is find them for cheap. Also, if I do end up going to a bigger cam, is there anything I'll have to do with tuning or special timing? Can't say I have ever installed performance cams. I researched and found out that I can run either of those cams with out performance springs, so I'm good there. Thanks for the help guys.

The thing you have to understand is, that if you plan on getting the MOST out of ANY turbo setup, you will need some type of fuel and timing control. You will want to customize your timing for the type of fuel you are running as well as dial in your a/fs.
Plus the 1g timing curve is pretty aggressive for any amount of decent boost(15psi+). I'd think the 13g would become pretty inefficient after 17psi, but you could always go the E85 route to turn that hairdryer to HP and push it to the limits. This all depends on your overall goals with the car and what you want out of the future and most importantly your budget.

By big cams I mean 280's or bigger

The 280s are meant for a way higher powerband than the 13g can support reasonably. Its possible it would maybe make more peak power? But the whole power curve would be lacking.
 
either leave the ones you have or go with kelford 272's!!!! i promise you will not be dissapointed. Than some dual valve springs/retainers

Kelford 272s are far more aggressive than your typical hks272,fp2, etc. Not really sure thats the best choice for a 13g setup either.
I'd really probably stick with the stock cams as they seem to fit the powerband that the 13g will most likely have the best. I'd save the money and put it somewhere else;)

for daily driver = Too big
 
I have a 92 auto13g setup aswell. You shouldnt upgrade to aftermarker cams unless you plan on getting your stall changed and going to a larger turbo. If you upgraded to 272's with the 13g and stock stall you will be even slower.just my .02. I actually think if you can find some cheap manual cams I would get them. Im probably doing that myself. Oh btw the only reason why I would get them is because my car will already be apart.
 
Match the cams to your set up. Your auto so you'll need a re-stall if you go with large cams.

Sounds like a good option would be a 264/272 regrind setup from Delta.
