Hi guys. I'm doing an auto to 5spd conversion. On top of that the engine and 5spd tranny are out of a 96 Tsi and i'm trying to put them into a 98 Gst Spyder. I've got the engineand tranny in and I also have the computer out of my 96 installed. I have disconnected the auto tranny control moduale. I have all my sensors hooked up (save for my reverse lights) I was to the point were, I though, she's ready to start. I turned the key and nothing. Well I did get a click sound from under the center console. Its not coming from the ECU, I know that without a doubt. I've also had my starter bench tested it's ok, but I'm not getting a signal to the starter. Now it is my understanding that I have a possible problem with the pins, that they are on the wrong places on there quick connects. I was wondering if this is correct and if someone had run into this problem before. If someone has a diagram of what they are suppose to be, could they share? Thanks for the help!

Thats the jumper I used. Your right, the jumper for mine and hellotbone are different. When i used the jumper he shown me, it had blown out a couple of fuses.

Reverse lights:
I used the number 2 but i forget the other jumper. I take a look tonight and tell you in the morning

Thanks!!!! I really appreciate all your help! Looking forward to hearing from you!

I just attached a picture of the wiring diagram. It shows the Red/Blue Stripe wire as the wore to the reverse lights and then the Black/White wire on the other side of the inhibitor. Should I jump one end of the reverse light sensor to the Red/Blue Stripe wire and the other wire of the reverse light sensor to the Black/White wire? Thanks for the help!

P.S. This diagram is from the Chilton Eclipse Manual

1.[Blk/Yel Stripe] 2.[Blu/Red Stripe] 3.[Red/Blu Stripe] 4.[Empty]

5.[Blk/Red Stripe] 6.[Solid Blk] 7.[Big Blk/Whi Stripe] 8.[Big Red/Blu Stripe]

9.[Whi/Blk Stripe] 10.[Yel/Blk Stripe] 11.[Solid Yel] 12.[Yel /Red Stripe]

So both #3 and #8 are Red/Blu but # 8 is a larger thickness.... so I am guess that either #3 or #8 gets jumped and #7 gets the other wire from the reverse sensor. If anybody knows, please let me know!!! Thanks!

Ok, so I just want to let everyone know wires 7.[Big Blk/Whi Stripe] and 8.[Big Red/Blu Stripe] need to be connected to the reverse light sensor on the trans. If you put the ignition in the ON postion and jump 7.[Big Blk/Whi Stripe] and 8.[Big Red/Blu Stripe] to each other, the reverse lights go on.

Now onto a different problem...I think my reverse light sensor is broken because I am not getting any current through it even when the car is in reverse using a voltmeter. I think the ball might be stuck in the sensor so I am going to take it out and clean it up or replace if needed....so anyways....anyone hear of these ever going bad?

If you don't mind me asking, what did you spend for all the parts to do your auto to 5spd conversion? I have a 95 tsi fwd, so it's basically the same as what you are doing. I just want to get an idea as to what I will be spending to do it. :talon:
Thanks

you are going to have more involved then we did, remeber we were auto awd's to manual awd's. You will need a driveshaft and gas tank as well as a new exhaust PLUS everything else we had to swap.. Much more involed in your swap but not impossible, just depends on how much money you wanna spend and how much time you have.
I had roughly $1k and all my replacements were around 50k-60k miles.

Goodluck

ah, I see. Well I really wasn't expecting to pay any less than $2k. I know it's expensive and time consuming. Luckily we have a garage on base that lets us do our own work for like $4 per hour so I know I'll have the lift and any other tools I'll need. Thanks for the help.

I paid $1350 for everything I needed through a friend. Hopefully it will be finished today.

Hows Warrensburg nowdays? I used to live in Clinton and Windsor. I worked in Warrensburg for a while at Hawkers. I have not been out there in 11 years so you know, its likely changed a lot.

Just keep your eyes open and be patient and you will find some good deals, this project has taken me almost 6 months , I've also been out of town working alot but nonetheless i took my time and waited for a decent price on good used parts.

Good luck to ya and keep us posted.

Warrensburg is still the same.....not much changes around here from what I heard.....but back on topic. I guess the good thing about a project like this is that I don't have the money to do it anyway yet, so that gives me plenty of time to look for good parts or maybe even a trashed donor car or something.

Thanks for the help guys!! :rocks:

Hate to bring a thread up from the dead but I'm trying to work out the kinks on my swap. I never had to jump any wires to get the car to start and reverse lights really aren't a concern to me. I'm having a very strange problem where when i push the clutch in I get a click noise from the back of the car. Even stranger is nothing is connect, the clutch switch is disconnected. This happens like 2 out of ever 3 times I push the clutch in. Any ideas? Also my brake lights aren't working as well and I think I'm not getting any voltage. All my fuses are good though.
