so i finally joined the forum. ive been a guest for awhile and always found my answers.but i need some help with this one. ive got a 90 tsi,i blew the trans/clutch about 2 months ago.now ive got it all back together and ive got a crazy loud tick from the valve area.here is how the rebuild went,i blew a chunk out the of bellhousing right around the serial number. the stage 3 clutch hub was toast.i put in a xtd stage 4 unsprung with their 11.5 fw. during the build i didnt touch anything with the motor other than tucking a few wires away and swapping the crank pulley to a underdrive. when i first started it i thought the top half of the motor was just dry and all the oil was in the bottom.let it run for about a minute and still a crazy tick.i pulled the valve cover noticed the timing belt has a slight grove worn into it . this really sucks!but i could really use some help im ready to drive the car again so if you could please help. thanks

im gonna change clutch disc too i found out that was a bad idea.

Timing belt groove is a bolt on the oilpan under the main pulley. A washer should fix that, I had the same problem.
As fare as the tick, if you didnt do anything to the engine, check your plug wires they could be arcing.

my guess, its just lifter tick...if you have not driven your car in a while, any noise from the engine is magnified x10 because your not use to hearing it. It's the paranoid phenomenon. Its like when you remove the power steering on your car and drive it for months, the wheel doesn't feel stiff but as soon as you drive it for the first time after weeks of just sitting there, you're just like damn this wheel is stiff as hell.

I bet after a few days you won't hear it anymore.

That is a pretty awful noise, it can not go on for long...

In the potentially good news department, I once had a lifter "pump down" on a Buick 3.8 - I thought I threw a rod bearing or something, it also sounded like hell. It just happened while driving around one night, nothing really happening - I stopped the car, restart, idle, stop, etc for a while, and then it magically went away, just like how it appeared.

I think the lifter clearances are supposed to be the tightest ones in the car, so any crud at all can prevent them from working correctly - maybe time for some flush and an oil change?

Also - timing belt groove - the oil pan has 1 or 2 bolts that are 1-2mm shorter than all the rest, that must go under the timing belt area of the pan - on my car, with all the original bolts, those 2 bolts have a different head stamp on them, so you can see them easily. If not, you can just pull the bolts under the timing belt area and probe them, then get some bolts that are for sure not too long.

so last night I pulled the timing cover of to check all the marks and the cam was straight along with the oil pump but the crank timing marks are 3 to 4 teeth off :( so i ve already ordered a new timing belt and tensioner. I'm gonna replace those, put it back in time, hope for the best and see what happens. any advice or something else I should know?

i gauruntee you valves are bent being one tooth off can bend them. sorry to say your gonna need new valves. someone correct me if im wrong but if you wiggle the rollers that are ontop of the valves and they are loose means that valve is bent. but im pretty sure thats valve to piston. sorry buddy

Don't guarantee anything! A loose rocker doesn't always mean bent valve. Could have a collapsed lifter.

If you are off 3-4 teeth at the crank, and seeing how hard it was to start that, I would say you have some bent valves. Pull the plugs and look into the cylinders with a flashlight. You will see fresh marks in the valve cutouts of the pistons.

Yeah bore scope and let us know the results, I skipped a tooth once and bent them all but hopefully you have better luck than I
