ATF with engine oil turbo

so i just started getting some lifter tick. my old non-turbo dsm had it to. last time i mixed a half quart of ATF with the oil to make it go away. just wondering if this is safe to do with a turbo charged engine?

well isnt ATF hydraulic fluid? so........ idk man i would not put that on a turbo engine...... nor my non-turbo

I've heard of people doing that since it has so much detergents to keep things clean. And that it will clean shit up pretty good. They just said not to use it for long.

I wanna say it was a bunch of VR4 guys telling me about that.

ya ive heard so many different ways. ive heard drive fore 10 minutes, ive heard idle for 5, ive heard leave it in for a couple hundred.
i tried to just let it idle then i flushed it out. but the tick came back the next day. so after that i put some more in, ran it normally for like 200km then it went away. but this was all in a NT..
so this is okay to do to my turbo?

its not like its full of trans fluid.. only like 10% trans fluid.
and im not running it for a full cycle. its in for a day or 2 then a full oil/filter change

ok, well im going to stop commenting. I do believe my trans teacher did say something about this, but i dont think he recommended it. He said on a old ratty beater engine why not try it. But if its my car probaly wouldnt go through with it.

i ran it in my 92 NT then flushed it. then drove it for a solid 6 months after with no tick, then i sold it to a friend who is still ripping the hell outa that thing with no tick.

well, then what are u waiting for if u have tried this , the only diff is the turbo..... Btw fro what i heard the tick is becuase the lifters oil holes get clogged very easiley and the only remedy is to buy new or 3g improved lifters. i bought some from dsm graveyard for $90.00

Just buy a set of 3g lifters and swap them out you dont even have to take the cams out, they are cheap and easy to change.

if u do replace them make sure to keep the CAMshaft Caps in order ### they are machined. i almost made this mistake till i noticed the wear patterns on mine.

Btw fro what i heard the tick is becuase the lifters oil holes get clogged very easiley

hence the reason why atm is used, high detergent level cleans and unclogs the tiny oil passages.
and yes, i would love to get some 3g lifters, and i will order them eventually. i just have other plans for my money at the moment.

ok, here is the REAL scoop on trans fluid. everyone above is part correct. engines have bearings yes? transmissions have bearings yes? lifters are hydraulic mechanisms yes? so YES you can run a small amount of atf in your engine. it will clean the engine quite a bit due to the large amounts of cleaners in the fluid. the proper way to do it is just before an oil change. let it idle 15 or so min with 1/2-1 quart trans fluid in the engine. then drain. do not rev the engine above 2k rpm or there is a SLIGHT risk you could scar your turbo bearings. works great. there is also other ways to clean the engine prior to an oil change. i run seafoam in a vac line and in the oil. works wonders. also can use mopar combustion chamber cleaner

I'll back up what casperfast said: if you dont want to use AFT there are tons of stuff on the market for cleaners. lucas makes great products.

Been doing this since the 90's with atf. id always drive around for a day. Not beating on any car. Then change the oil. Seafoam, works great too.

ya man, i only had about 1500 km on my oil when i put the atf in, then cruised around, low rpms, for an hour then changed it. oil was black! cleans it nicely.
