At What Mileage Should I Switch Oil After Break In

It sounds like you have the right idea, thats pretty much how I'm going to break my motor in. Just do the last change @500miles and you should be good!

I recall doing two more (at 1k and 2,500) before using the good quality stuff (regular oil). I used regular oil till 10k before switching over to full synthetic. Sean at FFTEC did my 6 bolt rebuild with forged internals and was very persistent that I follow his break in procedure. I remember he had a nice VR4 Spyder sitting in the shop that he used as an example for me. He told me that the customer left the shop after a full motor rebuild (forged internals) and came back 1200 miles later. Sean asked if he performed the oil changes to which the customer replied "no, it's every 3k right?":ohdamn:. Upon inspecting it - the cylinder walls were scratched and it was determined that he would need to hone the cylinder walls once again. I figured that guy's costly lesson was plenty for me so I stuck to the print out he gave me.:)

A lot of these things are different from person to person. The guy that help me put my car together said to do 3-6 3rd gear pulls at the lowest boost possible while letting the car slow down on its own power. That will set your rings. then I changed my oil. it has had another oil change since then due to upgrades.

All depends on how the break-in was performed.

If done normally, with occasional power blips to quicken in the seating of the rings, 5 to 600 miles is a good margin to go by, but not gospel by any means since there are no two blocks/motors alike.

But, to play it safe, after the break-in oils have all been removed and oil consumption have settled down to a very nominal and effective level, I'd wait until after the recommended 3month, 3k mile usage of dino oils before switching to synths.

You're in no big hurry to switch and the motor will not bust apart, nor the turbo will explode using dino oils.

Only thing, is to let the car idle a minute or two after a good run so the oil can pass through the turbo to cool down the bearings-and you should be doing this anyway on a turbo, no matter if using dino or synths oils.

I like to do the first oil and filter change just after the car fully warms up for the first time. The oil filter picks up a lot of assembly lube, leftover shavings and other debris and clogs up fairly quick. So I like to do the initial startup and warmup while checking for leaks and setting the base timing, verify everything works right, then burp the coolant. Change the oil + filter, then go out and do a few break-in pulls to seat the rings. Next oil change is at 500 miles, keep checking the oil level since a new engine tends to burn a little oil. To see if the rings are fully seated you can pull the plugs and look at the piston tops. They'll be wet on a new motor. Once the rings seat the piston tops get a dry carbon coating on them. Then it's time for synthetic.
