Well, basically this di*khead shop that has my car has somehow crushed 3 valves and now today I find out a friggin' piston and are trying to stick me with all the cost. Is it OK to reuse the piston rings or do I have to buy new ones?

Thanks, Ryan

If you are there already, it is wise to spend the $110 for new rings. If you are doing the labor of removing pistons, you may as well get new rings and hone the cylinders. Call it a poor man's rebuild.

I'm fairly certain that my manual states that you must new piston rings when removing the pistons, but maybe someone here has tried reusing rings with success.

So your only replacing one piston and leaving the other 3 correct?

You will have to rehone the cylinder if you put a new piston in and I mean really, while your in that far mine as well do the other 3.

But if you want to get really really Really REALLY EXTREMELY cheap you CAN run the old rings with no problems.

Like he said.
If your going into the engine and replacing one of the piston rings then you might as well do all 4. It's only a little bit more time/money and I wouldn't chance rebuilding just 1 cylinder in an engine and leaving the other 3 the same.

Right on. If you have to wait a week or two to save up the money, then by all means, do it. You WILL regret not replacing the piston rings when you had the chance. It takes a lot of work to get where you are right now as far as tearing the car down, and it makes absolutely no sense to ignore the rings.

Well, price on this job balloned from 300 to 700 but the rings are getting changed. Hope it lasts awhile! :)

Good choice. Do it right ONCE ;)

Good choice on changing all 4, the car should run stronger when you get it back. However I don't think you should have to pay a dime of that $700! After all they screwed it up. If I were you I would contact a lawyer and threaten to sue them if they don't fix it for free.
