I have an Autometer Ultra Lite EGT gauge and probe, i also have a 2G manifold on my 1990 GSX. The manifold in not tapped and therefore the gauge is not hooked up. I have read many posts abut EGT's being usless, or a waste of money. Then i read and hear from people that it is important to have. Now my question is, is it worth tapping the #1 runner and useing the EGT gauge, or is it worthless to install. I have an SAFC11 and a Pocketlogger. Will this EGT gauge useful enough to install, or what? With what i have installed in my car right now, will the EGT tell me anything important? All help is welcome.

Close but not quite. The reasoning behind putting hte EGT in the number one runner is that the injector is at the end of the fuel rail so is likely to be the first cylinder to run lean...

Just had to bust your balls. :D

I knew that but for the lever of conversation I tried to keep it simple. I guess I should have given a better reason either way.

My mods are Evo3 o2 housing ported, 2g manifold ported, 3" turbo back with no cat, boost/air fuel/egt gauges, SAFC11, Pocketlogger, 255 fuel pump. Stock 60K motor and suspension mods. These mods were on the car when i picked it up. My nextmoves are going to be ACT2100 clutch with oem throw out, either 550 or 660 (but i heard 660 was to much) injectors, Evo3 Big 16g massivley ported with 34mm flapper mod, FPR, FMIC, Dejon tool intake pipe and kn air filter. Also i don't know if my95tsi was calling me a bi*** or what, but just to clear the air i never said the reason i was thinking about not keepig my EGT kit had nothing to do with it breaking off and blowing my turbo, but i am sure it was written in this post by others to help me think of all sides of this gauge question i had. Has anyone ever tapped their own 2g manifold, and if so how did it work out? Also what level of conversation?

I drilled and tapped my own on my car. It wasnt hard. If you take it slow and careful you wont have any problems. Mine was still on the car and I never had anything go wrong. I followed this little write up.

When I was drilling the hole I just left the car running so that none of the metal would get in the mani.

I drilled my own manifold but i didn't tap it. For some reason i stripped the threads on the egt probe and i drilled the hole too big so i was kinda screwed. I fixed it by buying cold weld and sealing it around the edge. It has worked for over a year now with no probelms what so ever. I will be replacing my egt probe next month just to keep it functioning properly. I want to get a TRE probe but the probe itself isn't adjustable which i don't like. I recommend actually taking the manifold off the car it is really simple you just nned to get some good jackstands.

Nice, yeah i have taken the manifold off before, no big deal and no jack stands. I was just mainly intrested if there were any apecial tools or way going about tapping my 2g manifold. I think it was all answered. I am thinking of getting rid of the stock probe and getting a tre and keeping the gauge since i already have it why not use it. Thanx everyone for their help. If anyone has anymore help on tapping the 2g manifold i am all ears!
