I have an Autometer Ultra Lite EGT gauge and probe, i also have a 2G manifold on my 1990 GSX. The manifold in not tapped and therefore the gauge is not hooked up. I have read many posts abut EGT's being usless, or a waste of money. Then i read and hear from people that it is important to have. Now my question is, is it worth tapping the #1 runner and useing the EGT gauge, or is it worthless to install. I have an SAFC11 and a Pocketlogger. Will this EGT gauge useful enough to install, or what? With what i have installed in my car right now, will the EGT tell me anything important? All help is welcome.

Everything I've heard points to that it is useful if you have aftermarket exhaust, so you know when you're reaching a dangerous temp for the motor/turbo....I would not install the AutoMeter EGT...i've heard bad things about it....go with the TRE EGT probe....and yes....tap in on that first runner off the manifold..it will give you the most exact temps straight fromt he motor. :thumb:

People will say this and that but.....

I tuned my car pretty damn good with the use of a EGT. Maybe I was lucky or maybe I just have a good read on my engine. Regardless, I suggest it as a 2nd gauge to anyone that asks the question "What should my 2nd gauge be?".

*Use a logger when tuning, or you might mess up your summer.*

Well after seeing all the responses, i have come to the conclusion that EGT gauge in 1G with an SAFC11 and Pocketlogger is pretty worthless. If anyone has anything else to offer, please share.Thanx to everyone who helped!

well i think you guys scared me out of a EGT gauge :p I was going to replace my worthless a/f gauge with a EGT btu after seeing and reading this i cant see it being a major improvement. If the temp goes up on the engine wouldnt the factory gauge show that ?

Yes it should as long as it's working properly.
I think a new OIL pressure gauge or maybe a Oil Temp gauge would be nice personally.
:)

What if a spark plug electrode breaks off and kills the turbo??? We should take those out as well. What about litle bits of piston hitting it if we detonate??? We should take the pistons out also. Or we could do like we SHOULD and perform regular maintenence. I hate when people complain and say something broke or doesnt work when it was a simple change to do it right. It says that after about 30k you should change the probe and every so often (perhaps when you change the oil) you shoould check it, then you could avoid these problems.

The reason I like my EGT is becasue it will let me know if there is a problem with my car eveytime I get into it. How often does everyone drive around with there logger and watch it all the time? Not to many. An EGT will let me know if something happens that was unexpected and if it is causeing me to run lean or rich. If an injector dies and causes that cylinder to go lean an EGT will show that. If it gets stuck open and you run rich you will be abel to see that also. As a tunning tool there are alot more productas that do a better more accurate job, but as a monitor, like every other gauge, it does a great job.

Well i personally have my pockelogger setup where i can have it on all the time if i want, but i usually turn it on and watch it closely on the highway or places i am going where it is not around the corner or up the street. I was just gathering opinions that if i have a SAFC11 and a Pocketlogger that an EGT will be of any value to me. As it sits right now i have a Boost gauge, A/F gauge, the EGT gauge (not hooked up and don't think it will be) my SAFC11 and Pocketlogger. I am thinking of getting an oil pressure or oil temp gauge will be of better use to me? Any thoughts? I always hear everyone saying that the stock oil pressure gauge is always wrong, but i dont know? Well again thanx to everyone who helped out, and all the info has helped.

I would keep the EGt and get rid of the A/F. It IS useless becasue our O2 sensor is a narow band and really doesnt do shit. The oil gauge is fine unless you are building a racecar and need to makesure that you have enough pressure for the RPM you are running. If it drops thenm pull over and see why. If it stays normal then you are fine. Ditch the A/F and tap the EGT. I think you will be happy.

so so true. well now im thinking hmmmmmmmmm why not ? the reason i go back and forth is because i have a daily driven "race car". I only race here and there , the locals. I dont track it or anything. So im thinking would it be worth it for me. I am getting EVOIII 16G 550 injectors 190FP 3" apexi catback 2.5 straight pipe looking at gett 3" DP

If it is a toss up between an A/F and EGT the choice is easy. One works and the other doesnt. I am not saying that everyone should go out and buy one, but I do think they are a good tool to monitor what is going on in your engine. If you do decide to get one get a TRE probe.

That probe responds very very fast and is accurate. Those are the two complaints of most that dont like EGT and it solves both. I also got there special wire becasue i would rather spend a bit more money that n do something half-asses.

yeah my a/f gauge is on the trader i got it when i didnt even know what the hell i was doing. I am going to sell that very soon.

There is so much information going around, i mean you read some of the links above and most show that EGT gauge is god for 2g's but not so much neccesary for 1g's. So what you are trying to say is that the A/F gauge doesn't tell a person anything. Yesterday in when i just shifted to 3rd gear Gear i hit 40 degreese of timing advance and 0 counts of knock and the a/f gauge was reading rich! I think that the a/f works pretty good but i am not saying that as the concrete truth just bouncing off ideas. You learn something new everyday and i have the ultra lite EGT gauge and probe, also the ultra lite A/f. When i asked AMS they said EGT's are a waste especially the autometer the wideband was the way to go, but $450 either they were telling the truth or just trying to sell me a wideband.

It has nothing to do with generations becasue we all use the same hardware in either car.

The A/F gauge has no problems it does what it is supposed to do. the problem is with the sensor. Our sensor is used to tel the ECU the A/F ratio of the motor so it can adjust fuel maps. It is a narow band and only accurate at the stoich point witch is 14.7:1. After that it is not accurate and there for neither is the gauge. If you hade the gauge hooked up to a wideband O2 then I would say that and a logger would be the ultimate setup. I have an A/F gauge and it say rich but I have still detonated and retarded timming on the logger. If you get a wideband you wont be running that in the car all the time either. The sensors are expensive and not intended for long time use. They are the opposite of an EGT in that they are used strictly for tunning and not monitoring.

Alot of shops will tell you that it is bad for a TUNNING tool. As a monitor it is ok. A gauge isonly as good as the sending unit it is attachted to. Autometer gauges arent that great becasu they only go up to 1600 F. That is a bit above our sweet spot. If you burry it then you are runninf lean and thats bad. The bling Greddyone goes to about 2100 in F I believe btu also cost a good amount. Your call in the end. Use this info to make your choice.

If you gotta have one at least install it after the turbo. That way you're only wasting the money on the EGT, and don't have to worry about buying a new turbo too.

We already went over this problem.

I will now ask you a question and let me know the answer. 95% of all DSM owners that have an EGT have them placed on the #1 runner. If yours is on the DP and you ask someone else what they usually run as far as EGT's go how do you compare your numbers?

You cant. Most people put it there because along time ago one guy did it and the other followed so they could easily compare.

Close but not quite. The reasoning behind putting hte EGT in the number one runner is that the injector is at the end of the fuel rail so is likely to be the first cylinder to run lean...

Just had to bust your balls. :D

Anyone that says oh i'm scared of an egt probe breaking off and killing my turbo is a bi***. They are also the same people scared of crankwalk and asking about it every 5 seconds.
