Are 1g and 2g GST 5-speed trannies the same?

Well I have a 96 GST that I recently bought and had some pretty bad tranny problems with and I'm quite sure that the transmission is junk. A friend of mine suffered the same exact symptoms when he blew the spider gear in the transmisssion so I'm quite sure that is the problem. Regardless, I'm wondering if the 1g and 2g GST 5-speed transmissions are identical. Reason I ask is that my car is a 6 bolt swap so I'm not sure what I'm looking for for a transmission. I'm also curious as to what people's opinions are as to how much I'm looking to spend to pick up a decent used 5-speed. Any help welcomed!

1g in a 2g wont work. 2g in a 1g will. 2g's have three of four motor mounts on the tranny where as the 1g have 3 on the motor itself. You will be missing 2 motor mounts. To use the 2g in a 1g you would simply have to remove the mounts for the front and rear m.m. from the 2g tranny.

Ok, so if my car has a 6-bolt swap... What tranny is in my car?!:confused: Would it still have the 2g tranny with the 1g motor then?

It should still have the 2g. Best way to tell would be to look where the tranny bolts to the motor. There should be a motor mount right below your exhaust mani. If the mount is attached to the tranny casing it is a 2g. If it is on the engine block, it is a 1g tranny. The mounting points will not line up on a 2g frame as the mounts themselves are closer to the passenger side of the car.

Well ^^^^awnsered that very nicely, and I cant add any to that, as for the price, you can pick up a nice used 5 speed for 200$-450$ generally.
 
Well I guess that price isn't so bad... Well I looked at the tranny and it appears to be connected to the bellhousing of the tranny, that would mean its still a 2g then correct? I'm just reassuring myself before I go shop for anything... Thanks much though!:thumb:

One other concern I'd have is quality assurance... What would be suggestions as to how I can assure that I'm going to get a good well-working tranny if I were to purchase one used from someone? Is there any real way to gaurantee that I won't be buying a tranny thats already shot? Or is it just kind of a hope for honesty type thing?
 
hey man I dont know if your checking this . However if your mechanically incline, then the cheapest thing to do is pick up a good used 1g trans, and swap bell housings. wolf is right , but the internals are identical for both trans. the only difference is the bellhousing, in order to accomodate all the 2g mounts

Are you sure a 2g will work in a 1g I think the 1g axels are smaller
