I dont reccomend my 02 tuning technique to everyone, you have to be really in tune with your car to know what will work and what will not. Because if you dont do it right you can hve catastrophic consequences. With that disclaimer added I tune for:

@ Wid-Open Throttle(WOT) I aim for .85 volts @ 22lbs of boost running leaded 112 race fuel.

How do you know your .85 volts is accurately an .85 equivilent AFR with lead oxide coating your 02 sensor?

since I know I am pretty much dancing on the edge when it comes to tune of my car I have a little ritual I perform in between runs and before my first run of the day. I ensure I am starting with fresh clean plugs and 02 sensor. After a pass I pit and pull my plugs, before they have a chance to clean themselves of any tell tell signs of hi-heat or detonation. Then I clean, gap and replace. Same with my 02 sensor. I bring a couple of cans "Office Air Duster", basically compressed air. I clean out my sensor and replace. It is this time in the pits that also allows my plumbing and what not to cool. The most out of wack I have ever had one of my OEM 02 sensors read was .05 volts. I had one peak at .88 at WOT, I knew it had too many runs on it. So then I immediatly replaced it with a new one for the next run and the new OEM 02 read .83 volts a WOT. So the OEM units are good for a slew of leaded runs with minimal loss in accuracy. But then again this is just how I choose to tune and tweak my car. Of course it wont work for everyone, but you would be suprised how many old school mechanics still utilize this technique.

But you MUST know your car and know its limitations. make all changes gradual and whenever something does not seem right just let off. Because when you sense something does not seem right the car feels that 10 fold. Just like the old saying goes," Your car will never feel as fast as right before things begin to melt!"

Dang, well sounds like you've got it figured out. I can't imagine air blowing off lead oxide though.. the very nature of it is why they used it in older softer metal valve seated cars, to stick to teh seat and protect it from the valve. I'd say maybe carb cleaner but I"d imagine that could damage the sensor surface itself.

Out of curriosity how do you clean your plugs?

I routinely check mine but to check the 02 at the track seems like it would be a major pain, why not just switch to unleaded high octane?

At any rate your car is more than impressive. Good work.

The only time the car sees leaded fuel is at the track, the reason I run it is because at my local track thats all they have. So the rest of the time I have unleaded gases blowing across my 02 sensor. I clean my plugs with a brass brush in one hand a mechanics glove on the hand holding the plug-they be hot!

Pulling my 02 sensor is actually pretty easy, I have trimmed my 02 housing heat shield, so just an open end socket(designed for 02 sensors), pivoting extension and a rachet.

Thanks for the compliments, now if I can get 11's next time out and then I will be jumping for joy :D

3 days ago I run 14.5 @ 95mph with 2.1 60foot on TSI AWD Talon

Mods:

Brand new 14B
Full 3" Exhaust with o2 Eliminator and external dump
Rewired pump
Upper hard Pipe with HKS SSQV
Max boost 14PSI no boost controllers
Free Mods
Runing 94 Octane with no Knocks

It seems impossible to get into 13s, Am I doing something wrong? Because the only thing I don't have is Boost Controller and MAFT

PS: My best 60 foot is 1.9

That 14.5 run could have been lowered with a better 60 ft time on that run.

Jose runs the MAFT setup, so he can lean the car out a bit more. i have found that our cars run awfully rich from the factory. I bet taking away 10% of fuel, would yield some interesting results from the getgo.

And he was also running race gas with ALOT more boost than you. IF you try the same, and get that launch down, you'd be saying hello to low 13's.

Sorry, but what is a maf-t ?

the maf-translator takes the signal from a GM MAS and converts into a signal that our ECU's can understand while giving you the ability to control your fuel trims to a certain extent. That is it in a nut shell.

It elimates the stock air can and MAS/MAF. but you must run a GM MAF.

OMG Holy crap man you really galloped like a finely tuned machine!OMG Thats really cool to see you run on basically stock internals w/dat 14b hauling ass! Big props to you bro!:thumb:

why did you chose the 3.5 gm maf over the 3.0

what size intercooler piping do you have?

its been two years, have you run an 11 yet? not to say a 12.1 isnt impressive as Im hoping for any 12 second I can get with a set up close to yours.

ive got exhaust leaks like none other, did you notice a huge power increase from sealing them up though?

how much does she weigh?

what is the leon door trick?

keep on representing the 14b for us all. you know the 3/s guys have even started using the 14b to get good times as well. maybe theres more to this turbo than people are willing to give it credit for.

Hey Guys! Sorry its been a while since I have posted, but still around. Shortly after my 12.1 pass I put the talon back in storage as I had to go to Korea. Now I am back in Japan and the car is still in Storage. So she has been in storage for over 2 years now. And if you recall she was in storage for nearly 8 years before I starting modding. So for the 14 or so years I have had the car she has been in stoarge for 10 years of that. When I do make it back, which probably wont be for another couple of years, she will be a dedicated track car and no longer a daily driver. So I can put her on a serious diet, frp hood, frp doors, frp fenders(maybe), frp hatch and lexan windows. And a few other goodies. I will continue to stick with the 14b as she is an autoX purpose built and for SCCA purposes I can stay in the stock class. She just happens to be quick when I take her to the dragstrip. My fmic plumbing is 3" and 3.25 in places. The leon door mod was he gutted the doors completley, motors and all locking the glass in the up position, I forget the weight savings but it was substantial.

You guys keep rocking I'll be back in the mix before too long.

Great to hear from you Jose! I'm also going down the road of the 14b, should be out next year chasing down 11's. Out of curiousity what did you use to lock the windows in the up position? I'm planning on gutting the doors this winter and was thinking about doing that with some small clips or something. Can't wait until you get back and give me a run for my money!

Jose, its very good to hear from you again man. its funny that i was just looking at your website the otherday and all of a sudden your posting again. i was looking at your gutted headlight mod and im seriously debaiting doing this. what kind of lights did you use? to you still retain the high and low beams? did it lower coolant temps any since your forcing fresh air in the engine bay with the sleepy eye mod?

and if you dont mind me asking what do you do for the military? it seems you move around alot! where in Ft Walton is your car so i can steal it...
