I just picked up a bare 6bolt and I just wanted a ballpark figure on how much it would cost to have it machined, hot tanked, bored, etc. (This will be my first build and i'm a little clueless :() Also, What should I have the shop do while the block is there? Can I have a list maybe? And approximate prices on anything on that list? Thanks!

Im paying 600 for a simple maching, bore, hone polished crank, thermal clean, resurface, rods redone, disassembly and reassembly. Im also getting the block balanced for 120 more. for the ehad it cost 220 for labor for simple rebuild. Im in Chicago,IL so i dunno maybe it varies from place to place.

Where I live there are 2 different shops considered as good as each other, and they are "the best", so to speak.

I had my block cleaned, bored, honed, hot tanked, deck surfaced, pistons cleaned/blasted/worked over, rods peened, crank polished, and pistons pressed on the rods for $180.71 out the door. The work was immaculate. I have heard this is reasonable for our area, for the time it took (3 weeks OMG ). I have heard the other "best" guy would have done it within 3 days but it would have been more like 280-320 ish.
This was just for the machine work, no assembly/disassembly.

Hope that helps ya' out.

yea, that does sound rediculously cheap. get me the address of this shop and i will send my ####ing block there LOL.

Dunno

The shop is in wichita, ks. It's called Chet Wilson Engine Service, 559 W Douglas Ave, Wichita, KS 67213-4701, (316) 264-5155.
Chet himself passed away some years ago, the shop is now owned and run by his son Jerry. Here is a lil historical info on the man/place:

I can always take a digicam pic of the receipt :thumb:

So...what kind of prices are other people paying, in other parts of the country?

I was quoted $240 to just deck/bore/hone/clean/degrease my block which in my book is rediculous. Friends told me they're the best shop in town though. I'm gonna bring them the block with just the crank and attached rods/pistons and have them do the above and also new bearings/piston rings and polish the crank so I hope all this work doesnt run me over $500

this info is from engine rebuilder magazine a mag for rebuilders. they do market surveys. so i am just passing this on

boring per hole in the 25.00 to 45.00 range average
clean and prep a block with new galley plugs , varies because each shop has a diffrent proceedure, range 45.00-150.00
deck a block . 75.00-145.00
line bore or hone, 125.00-250.00
grind crank. 75.00-180.00
index grind crank. 150.00-260.00
assemble a basic stock engine. 150.00-375.00
if you need cylinder head prices just ask
www.overbore.com

hope this helps.

looks good, thanks a lot. i'll be calling up the machine shop to see their prices (i'll post them to compare :) )

Block - tank, resurface, bore, & hone with torque plate $230.00
Crank - polish $32.00
Crank - balance $100.00
Rods & pistons - hone & fit pins $40.00

Some place in the boonies, but they have a 4G63 torque plate. I double checked all clearances before assembly. I hope to start it next week.
