to ohio people.... title says it... is there any way to pass emissions in Ohio with a turbo back exhaust? or should i just get a high flow cat?

I have heard quite the opposite, heard a few stories of dsm's passing e-check with no cat....ohio's visual part of the test isnt very thourough if done at all...to be safe, i'd just eaze the stock downpipe/cat back on for the e-check, then you are good for 2 years

or get a buddy who works with doing inspections. ive heard of places where if you slip the guy an extra 10$ he will do what you want... look for a shady place that does the inspection and if he does it and you fail, just say you really need it inspected and give him some money.

If Ohio is anything like California, in that they hook up the smog machine to your exhaust then it will be very difficult to pass without a catylytic converter. If you only need to pass a visual then there is a trick I use... Take your factory cat and cut the 2 welds on either side with a dremel, pry the shell of the cat apart and use your dremel to enlarge the inlet and outlet holes to the size of your new exhaust. Drill 4 holes on the flange 2 on either side near the ends of the tube. Using 4 shallow bolts wrap the cat-shell around your test pipe drop a washer and nut on each bolt and tighten it until the thing doesn't rattle. If you think you can pass an emissions test without a cat then this little illusion might help you. Good Luck!

If they strap you to the rolling test, you don't stand a chance; however, if your ECU isn't throwing any codes, then you should pass the ODB2 test.

ok so i could bolt the stock downpipe, and cat back and hope to pass? although my flex section is leaking like crazy... would i greatly reduce performance if i got a high flow cat?

I'm thinking about buying a full buschur system btw.. downpipe, and exhaust.. thinking about 2.5, because i've heard that 3" is too much for the tiny25, but anywho i might get their high flow cat too...

i'm getting all buschur because they live like 20 minutes away, and i trust them, plus they're gonna install a new clutch for me so i figure, while they're at it... they could install my exhaust..

thanks guys

since your awd, they'll only do the visual test and sniff test right? if thats the case, just dont have anything bling under the hood. but they still check for the cat
if they have the awd dyno just slap on an obd2 compliant cat on there and your set. and not all hf cats are obd2 compliant. they'll #### up your numbers.

btw, i passed with an 02 elim turboback with flying colors. but i had an obd2 cat installed

I passed in Wisconsin with and apex'i dp and cat back. So no cat. The people only plugged in the thing to the obdII port under the dash. I was sure I wasn't going to pass because I thaught it would read from the second O2 sensor (and it would be the same reading as the first) but I was just fine. then again, they did no visual inspection, but I know some cars in Wi do get a visual

Im in Cali and I bet its way harder here to pass than over there. A couple buddies of mine as well as me were able to pass the tailpipe test w/o a cat over here (before the dyno laws were passed) and we were able to pass...all it took was some creative tuning and an old gas station....leaned the shit out of the entire rpm range w/my afc cuz lean means your burning cleaner...then we filled up with the environmentally friendly 76 gas...passed here w/o cat, cake. I just babied the car till after the test so i could richen it up.
About your DP selection...Buschurs DP leaks pretty bad too. His flex section only lasts about a year before it goes, have seen two of my buddies go through them, and they got theirs after i had been running mine for a few months already, and theirs started leaking after about a year. Then they jumped on my boat and bought a Hahn Racecraft piece. Way better and I have had mine for 2 years now without ANY problems. Its a bit pricey but waaay worth the extra cash. Just my 2 cents. I know lots run w/buschur and are happy....i have just noticed that his stuff could fit better and last longer

sickgsx-316, what shop did you bring your car to smog it? I don't need to do it yet, but it's good to know where I could bring it and not have to worry about visual. I asked one shop while they were doing some welding for me and the guy took a look at my t3/t4 and external wastegate and said hell no. Other than visual, my car should pass fine though.

or just find a county that doesnt test for emmisons....go get a po box, plate the car there...and drive around with a test pipe all day.

ditchmagnet:
Here in WI they only ask for the city and county where the car is being driven. All you have to do is say it is being driven somewhere where emissions are not taken and your set. If they question it you can say your uncle has a place there and you go there often and want a car to drive. I've been doing it for years now. You can even put your real address down on the documents.

Dude, I just went to a local chevron (redmond/almaden for me). If you are havin trouble there are about 3 smog places on Santa Clara down-town near the Arena that will smog you for 150-200 CASH. I think one of the bigger reasons I passed is because my car is a sleeper, outside and under the hood. (I always loved poppin my hood to some SS guy and saying it was stock save for inake/exhaust, and then gettin them to run) Nothing shiny (save for the BOV), all my IC piping and my big intake pipe are black, turbo unpolished, and before I smog I make sure there is a nice layer of dirt on the IC/intake pipes. I kinda figured if the smog guys think I pay attention to whats under my hood cuz its all shiny, they might have to look a little harder, but if its dirty and looks not well maintained, then they dont really look twice. Then I go home and shine it all up.

Is your external on the exhaust mani or dp? What I got one of my buddies to do who was running an external was to have a non-blingy heat shield made to cover the wastegate/exhaust manifold so it was out of sight.

I live in Ohio and I passed e-check with a 3" turboback and no cat. Emissions did go up significantly from my first testing (back when it was still stock), but it still wasn't anywhere near failing.

Oh btw, you're AWD so they don't even put your car on the rollers. They just stick the probe in the muffler and let the car idle. At least that's what they did with my friend's AWD Talon.

As for the "visual inspection," the dude just looks under the car. My 3" catback has a muffler/resonator in the midpipe, so I guess that looked enough like a catalytic converter to satisfy the tester.

I'm just going to take the time and put my downpipe back on, should only take 30min to do. I'm not too sure about my IC piping and my intake, probably will have to replace that too cause they are both chrome. Actually my BOV is too, damnit.
