Going to be trying it this weekend and trying to get as prepared as possible. I ended up grabbing the jay's racing tools and am using Vfaq :thumb:

Any last minute tips only experience can give?

Beer... lots of it.

Just keep everything labeled and FOLLOW the book/VFaq. Don't try to skip steps or get lazy. Do it right. Good luck!

I was going to say make sure you have a case of beer but I was beat to the punch.

Make sure you set the belt deflection properly and make sure you follow the 2g timing belt VFAQ. Take your time, be patient, and if you are unsure post your question.

Good luck.

I did several tbelt jobs before i bought the jay racing tools and IMO the kit from jay racing make a Tbelt job 2x as easy. the best tool being that little plactice piece that goes between the cam gears... also save the pin from the tensioner it come in handy incase you have to losen the tensioner later to do a HG or something

Belt deflection  oh god  time to start memorizing the vfaq

Read through the VFAQ about 6-8 times before you attempt. Then walk through the steps one by one as you're doing it. Then check to see if you've done it correctly at the end. Then take it off and do it again, reading through the steps. The more you do it, the better you'll become, the more natural things will feel. The first time I did it, I put on and removed the belt about 6 times to make sure I was doing it right as well as to try and figure out some of the tips/tricks to making it tension easier and the correct amount.

Belt deflection is how much you can move (wiggle) the belt once it is tensioned. Just like setting tension on your accessory belts. Belt deflection mainly has to do with your balance shaft belt. Just take your time. I think my first timing belt job took a couple days because I was freaking out and searching the internet/ manuals double and triple checking that I was doing everything right.

Make sure you change the water pump too while you're in there.

What I did also - read VFAQ a bunch of times along with my Chilton, yet what saved me was I've done T-belt changeouts on a lot of OHC vehicles (including 3, 4G37 belt changeouts which is a job that a 8 yr old can do, compared to the 4G63), but this was my first one with all of the extra goodies that one has to set perfectly so the t-belt is dead square in time.

Took me almost a whole day to get it all right, but it was definitely worth it.

No shortcuts with this motor - do it perfectly, or you pass "GO" and go to "SNAFU JAIL" for you to live in til you pay the dues to get out.

If you want a PITA belt change experience, do the 6G72 (3.0L) V6 motor... And Suba's EA82 double belt OHC setup..

Good luck, be patient and be careful - DSM
