Any one ever replace the lash adjusters in a 4g37?

I have to replace the lash adjusters in my 93 talon dl. It is ticking like a sob. My Hanes book said that this is the first thing to check so I am just going to replace them. I ripped the valve cover off of one at the junk yard but i couldn't get the rocker arm assembly off. I removed the bolts that hold it down but couldn't even budge it. Plus I went to Advanced Auto to see how much the adjusters cost and they didnt even know what they were. They wanted to sell me the entire lifter assemblies at 13 bux a piece. Which if thats it, it isnt a bad price to get rid of this damn ticking. Any thoughts? :talon:
 
Search for your lash adjusters online, They will be much cheaper. Advance Auto is in it to make money, so I can see why they did not have your inexpensive part and tried to sell you something else that cost more. (The last time I bought lash adjusters online they were super cheap) Advance once tried to sell me a new alternator and I only wanted to buy the replacement brushes!



IMO junkyard lash adjusters will probably be no better than the ones you currently have, Try to find new ones if you can... A rubber mallet may help with the rocker arm assembly.

You did of course take the belt off? It would have been better if you had set all pistons level so you can't bend valves. Are the cam followers the same as the twin cam? If so use an open end wrench and pop them off the lash adjusters by prying upward and to the side. You may have to rotate the cam a bit to unload the valves that are open. With the twin cam you can get them off the valve hat but I prefer the adjuster side because it doesn't put a deflecting load on the spring and valve stem.

Using a shot filled plastic hammer, smack each of the cam towers fore and aft 1 blow. No shot filled hammer, you can use a block of wood and a metal hammer as a substitute. Repeat the process at least a couple of times, then repeat except side to side. Take 2 bolts and put them in about 1/2 way down the hole and then rock fore and aft while pulling upward. Use commonc sense.

Let me know if that doesn't work.

You can't bend valves in a 4G37 as its a non-interference engine.

Before I accept this as completely true can you support this statement?

While it is probably true unlike the twin cam the valves cannot collide with each other (interference) because they are not inclined so cannot foul, they still can collide with the piston. I would be quite surprised if they have managed to put enough relief in the pistons so this cannot happen.

It is important to know if this cannot happen so please give us the low down so liberties can be taken.

As far as I know, ALL of mitsubishi's SOHC motors are non-interference by design. I've swapped timing belts on several 4G37s that have snapped the timing belt, and they do not bend valves. I have never seen a 4G37 head with bent valves - other than one - someone brought it in, claiming it fell off his shelf.

Onto your lifters. They are different from the 4G63 lifters. They're bullet-style, same as the 3rd gen eclipse. To change them, you just loosen the rocker assembly enough to move the rockers off the tops of the valves, and they'll fall out. Use rubber bands to hold the new lifters inside the rocker arms while you tighten up the rocker assembly.

i am literally in the middle of this. I decided to try and clean my lifters before spending the money. It has worked for some but other have had to replace.

I have a 99 gst

It seems for some reason my car has the revised lifters? i dont know but the hole on top looks as big as the ones everyone says are the revised one. Maybe my car was made late enough for this to be standard.

maybe the have been replaced? who knows.

my car started ticking about a month ago 70k miles or so.
I am at 80 something now.
I am letting them soak right now and am about to go finish cleaning them and reinstlal them. ill let you know if its succesful

this is by far one of the easiest things i have done on a vehicle.
 
iv eonly ran it for about 10 minutes but it doesnt seem any better thna before.
maybe they were just worn and not clogged and sticking...
looks like ill by some new ones of ebay for 128+ship.

I'll back this up - the 4G37 is a non-interference design. I'm pretty sure the DSM manual outlines it somewhere, but I don't have mine handy. I have seen a guy snap a timing belt on a 1.8L and then crank it over repeatedly trying to get it to start - no bent valves.
