It needs to be perfect or you risk the chance of bending the valves again. It was a major pain in the ass getting everything lined up when I did mine. It takes some fanageling but you should be able to get it perfect. Just follow the instructions in the Haynes manual if you have one and keep trying until you get it perfect.

thanx silver....yea i got the book!
yea i must have put this dam thing on and off 40 times!!!!! im not even jokin... any tips on what u did to make it work....???
heres the deal....as u may know when u set the crank 1/2 notch BTDC and cam arrows straight across when u get to the intake cam its a half tooth off.... then if u pull it the exhaust rolls off center line.....then i tryd baising the gears slightly to compensat!! still havent had good luck. best i got was lined up slightly down from center line!!!!
did u have some1 help u hold the cam gears ??? the lobes on the #1 cylinder should be facing out ???!!!! it just seems like somethins wrong ......any other pointers would be greatly app.

First, make sure the dowel pins on the cam are facing up, and your crank and oil pump timing marks are aligned.

Place the belt on the intake cam and use string, clips, zip ties, something to hold the belt in place. Place a 17mm wrench on each cam bolt with the ends pointed in towards the center like this /\. That's so you can squeeze them together with one hand. Squeeze until the timing marks are aligned and then place the belt on the exhaust cam and tie it in place. You can now turn loose of the wrenches.

Find the outside timing mark of either the exhaust or intake cam and count the teeth on the belt across the top of the belt until you reach the outside mark on the other cam. This should be 39 teeth. If it isn't, the timing is off.

Take the belt and feed it down around the idler pulley, oil pump sprocket, crank sprocket. Keep as much slack as possible out of the belt. I usually rotate the oil pump slightly counter clockwise, put the belt on, then align the sprocket clockwise to pull the slack out.

Keep the belt tight and slide it on the crank, around the tensioner pulley and the belt is installed. Put a little tension on the tensioner pulley, turn the crank 1/4 turn ccw, then back 1/4 cw. This will take the slack out of the belt. Recheck all your timing marks.

If everything is good, then set the tension on your belt, button it up.

@SrKegler: Pssst; While changing a timing belt is mostly similar for most engines, the procedure you described is only about half accurate for the 420a engine.

@OP: The cam gears being about 2mm off center will not cause a valve-to-piston collision, but is enough to alter the behaviour of the motor. Keep trying.

My dads buddy gave me a hand. He let me use his shop when I did mine so after I could not get it by myself he came over and helped me. I think it took us about three tries to get it right. The biggest problem is getting the belt on the cams. The easiest way to get it on there is to put a wrench on the cam bolt so that you can wiggle the sprocket around while your sliding the belt on. Other than that we didn't do anything special, just followed the book.

thanx again every1!!!
gunna give it another try tomorrow night ...... ive been workn on it by myself and was starting to think i need a 3rd go-go gadget arm!!;)

but i swear if u follow the haynes book it just cant work ...when i follow it the best i can get it is tooth -2-tooth on the intake cam gear...im not gunna let this car get the best of me...:nono:

if any1 else has input ..:thumb:
