Another potential DSM

I found another potential DSM for me to pickup-- a red '97 GSX with 150k miles. As far as the ad describes/pictures I can tell it has a 6 Bolt swap, front mount, a 16g, walbro 255, crower 272's, v3 link, etc. it seems the owner doesn't know much about the car.

On to the real question, he said the car was smoking white smoke. He said it just had the motor rebuilt though. He bought another 16G and put it on, and it still smokes. He called a shop and was told it was the head gasket. So he wants to sell it.

Now I'm thinking before I buy it, I'm going to compression test it. This should tell me if it needs a new head gasket. I'm also going to see if there is coolant in the oil. What else should I check, if the head gasket is not the problem? He describes it as it smokes on startup and increases. I was thinking valve seals or Pcv system?

FYI, theres one in kampsville,il im sure youve seen. Its been posted a few times, needs a new HG as well. He would probably come way down off his 3k dollar asking price. I saw the red gsx youre talking about. If he went down closer to 3k it might be a good deal. All depends on what condition the engine is REALLY in, right? I see it says rebuilt tranny too. Thats a huge deal in my book.

Yeah I've seen the other red one. Looks pretty nice. Yeah he has receipts for the tranny/motor/clutch also. It's also coming with 4 turbos (all are eBay 16Gs though except one 14b)

most mitsu dealers will do a detail inspection/analysis of a car and even give you an estimate on repairs for cheap and sometimes even free. if there is one nearby you could schedule an appointment and bring it in the day you go to check it out, i've done it before and it was a smart investment.
