So after 185,XXX miles my oem exhaust has finally seen its last mile. I was looking to upgrade, sorry if this is in the wrong section. I want something not oem, but don't wanna sound like a Honda Civic. Wondering if you guys had any suggestions. Nothing crazy, it's "just a 420a". Thanks guys.

depends on what you are wanting to look at. you want a muffler, muffler with custom piping, cat-back, etc.?

Best sounding exhaust I've owned was a 3 inch turbo back with dual resonators and an Apexi Dunk muffler. :) Had a very nice gurgle to it. Cost next to nothing to have a local shop weld it up for me. The most expensive part was the muffler.

Ive been supporting my japanimportshop exhaust from ebay. Its a very nice sounding exhaust. But im unsure of the sounds and fitment on a 420a.
^ this is good to hear I just ordered it yesterday ( I am on a budget LOL)
On my old RS I did an apexi exhaust and loved the way it sounded.

2.5in with a Flowmaster muffler will sound great. You could also get a deep tone by running a "straight-pipe" with a quality resonator (or 2 resonators). Well, as deep as you can get on a n/a 4 cyl car without becoming a civic ROFL

I have been ready for an upgrade as well for my gst. What do you guys think about this exhaust?

They have one for the non turbo as well. Such a good price. In time I think I would chop the muffler and replace it with a magnaflow or flowmaster muffler.

My main question is what would you gain out of spending $500 more for an Apexi, Tanabe, or HKS?

With exhaust's long as they don't have any bottles necks in there design they are pretty much equal flow wise materiel wise some will rust out faster then others but you are paying for the same sometimes i have the HKS cat back and trust me was not worth what i paid when i could have good a Megan racing for half the price.

OP: i would go to an exhaust shop. That would be your best bet and cheapest as well. Also, if you want, get rid of cat and you dont need 2.5". 2.25 or even 2" will flow all that 420a will EVER put out unless you plan on going turbo one day.
