another cooling issue

hey guys,

for the last week or so my car has had some cooling problems. everytime I get the car warm and stop at a stop light or let it idle the temp gauge goes up past the squiggly line. it isn't too bad and it goes up really slowly. another thing is when this happens there is a high pitched whining noise until I get the car back to normal temps. I think it may be the fan because I never hear it turn on anymore and the heat increase doesn't seem too bad.

any suggestions??

id say one of your fan motors has gone bad....easy way to check start your car and wait to c if they turn on....the whiney noise is probably the fan motor trying to start the fan....id check other things such as coolant levels and your thermostat....

Could be your fan but if it is whining when it gets back down to temp. it sounds like the bearing in your waterpump is going bad. Which would explain why it is getting hot at idle. Would definatly check the fan though, I know I had a problem with that on my 1g for the longest time and that is what it ended up being.

and yea the whining only happens when it starts to get hot and then goes away after I start driving and the temp goes down

i agree with what that guy said, it could be your waterpump. my friend had a very similar problem and a couple days later his water pump broke

In some cases, you can check your coolant to determine if you have a bad water pump or not. Drain you coolant into a clean drain pan and run a magnet through the drained fluids. If you get little speckles and fragments stuck to the magnet, there is a good chance your water pump is going to take a crap soon.

Also, simply disconnect both fans and drive around (safely and close to home). If you still hear the noise, you can be more sure it's the waterpump than anything else. Just let it warm up to standard operating temperature and take it around the block a couple times. Good luck.
