Aloha,
Oregon
This weekend their was an Autox practice Saturday and event 1 Sunday.
Saturday's goal was to scrub the tires of that winter rot and try to get some stick out of those 2 year old 275 V710s, but the day turned out to be a battle with oversteer. The back end just would not stay planted at all during transitions. I knew from last year I was still a bit stiff in the back and with the snappy oversteer it was all but impossible to have confidence driving the car hard. I couldn't manage to put down a single fast run cause it was just too hard to maintain.
On a good note though, we got the tire pressures really close as far as roll over goes and they were surprisingly low. 22psi up front and 18psi in the back.
Saturday night I decided to try disconnecting my rear bar to keep the back in check and see if it leads to too understeer.
Sunday's event somehow ended up fairly dry and my Co-driver took the first run. Watching it, it seemed to kick the back out just a touch but looked pretty controllable. Chris said it felt pretty planted but had a touch of power oversteer . I decided to just make a nice smooth run to see how the car felt and damn! Removing the sway bar had a much larger effect than I had anticipated. The back end became beautifully controllable. Slight corner entry oversteer when trail braking which is exactly what I wanted. Other than that it didn't go anywhere.
The other difference though, now I could put the power down. Since the rear bar effects how much the front inside wheel lifts and now their wasn't anything, all the sudden pulling out of corners on power was amazing. Half way through the corner I start feeding in power and get to full throttle by corner exit and I was having almost no power understeer. The car just pulled out of the corners.
On my 2nd run I tried pushing harder and it seemed I wasn't coming anywhere near the limits of the car and I was now 0.1sec behind the 1st place guy.
I tried to overdrive the car on the third run knowing I had decent time already and crap, I'm still not driving the car at the limit but holy #### it was fast. Never has it had this combo of grip, turn in, balance, and traction. Now its to the point where It feels like I'm going way to fast but I turn the wheel and car dives in like I'm doing half the speed.
The 2.4l with the Evo3 at 20psi and the cyclone manifold switching over at 2800rpms is another amazing combination. On street tires and 25psi I'm having 2nd gear traction problems. I cant think of a single corner I had lag. On the tightest corner by the time I got to full throttle I had full boost.
Not bad for a 3200lb car and a great way to start the season.

. I kinda wish I went with the 285s on an 18, but this seems to work as is and 18s would just make my stock brakes look even worse.
