Well, they werent pretty but I still managed to stay ahead.

This weekend was a 2 day event with both event 3 and 4 of the year happening in Packwood washington.

Saturday:

Oregon Region SCCA - Oregon Region SCCA Solo - Event #3: Packwood, WA 06/13/09

The day was sunny and dry all morning until right at lunch. My first run started mildly wet and finished with a major downpour. My run was still not bad considering and I knew I was ahead of the competition, yay for co-drivers heating up my tires. Even though it was wet, I got to really feel the suspension changes and it was amazing. With the engine tuned 16psi was almost too much power. I could pull out of corners and just light all 4 through 1st. It was awesome :hellyeah:

My next run was soaking wet and was pretty much used to see how my changes worked in the wet. The last event (a totally wet day) had my car looping anytime I turned the wheel it seemed.

Third run had started to dry out and the line was starting to really pic up the grip. Almost everyone who ran in the morning had their best run this lap unless they coned it.

4th and 5th fun runs saw even more drops in time and I dropped down to a 64.4 with track drying up.

Sunday:

Oregon Region SCCA - Oregon Region SCCA Solo - Event #4: Packwood, WA 06/14/09

sundays course was pretty much saturdays course backwards with a few changes. Overall they made it really fast. I was hitting upwards of 70mph on the back side where as I was only getting around 60 on saturday. It was dry and sunny all morning but by the time I ran, last of the day, it was a little cloudy and windy.

Each run was pretty much me going back and forth with the Dan's in the Sti, with my winning by only 0.07 sec on the 3rd run. We got a total of 6 runs, I blew my 3rd run but my 4th run I broke into the 59s with a 59.7. The last run I tried to brake and turn a bit earlier cause I was getting a little sloppy but with a mistake and going a bit to easy on the back side I still only got a 59.6.

Overall, it was a great weekend. Of course its always nice when your winning, but the competition was great fun.

Car Changes:
After event 2 where my car just had more uncontrollable oversteer in the wet (even with no rear bar) I looked into my natural frequencies. The 700lb/in rate gives about 2.1hz in the front and a 450lb/in in the rear gives ~2.7hz, WAY to much. Dropping to 350lb/in gives a 2.2hz which is right in line. I re-installed my stock bar and installed a replacement for my bad SPC ball joint in the SPC arms.

Top tip, if you have SPC arms use some safety wire to hold the boot on not the crappy clip that comes with it. They dont make the arms anymore so it took me a month to get a new one ball joint made and cost ~$80. Mine popped off and of course dirt got in and killed it.

congrats, time to win a trophy at the packwood tour! but hopefully better than my last place sm trophy in 2005 =)

Looks like this year Ill miss the pro solo and national tour. At $95 and $90 each its just too expensive while Im trying to finish my masters. Next year Ill probably be in a different car and have a job so hopefully no excuses then.

Nice work Dallas! Good to see you're getting the suspension sorted out.

I got the SPC arms this year, and the first thing I did was remove those ball joint boot clips and replace them with haywire. They've been holding up great so far.

I tool your advice and also made a 2" block to set the ride height, worked like a charm. Much better than setting it with 3 fingers ROFL

Are you on your third season with the 275s too? What pressure are you running?

We tried upping the pressure this weekend cause the tire was moving around quite a bit, but that just lost grip. We had the best tire roll, rear end control, and cornering speed with 22psi front and 20psi in the rear. It seems so low, but we definitely got slower trying 26/24.

Points are now updated

Oregon Region SCCA - Oregon Region SCCA Solo 2009 Preliminary Points Report

Im back in first place with a healthy lead. After the first 2 events I was in 2nd, but the 2nd event I spun each run leading to a weak 4th place finish.

Dan Keuhn, who is my main competition had a mediocre first run (behind my first run by a second), and with the wasted 2nd run from the rain had to really push it on the last run. Well that would have worked out if he didnt miss the first gate, something I did on my first run :ohdamn:

It was a cluster of a starting area, and probably half the drivers missed it at one point cause it was so damn confusing. It was one of those things where if you were looking 2-3 gates ahead you missed the first one.

Yes, third season on the 275/40R17 V710s (or effectively 17 events). I've been using the same tire pressures (hot) all along... 31F / 29R. Why those pressures? Because that's what someone suggested 3 years ago and I never took the time to try anything different. :D

Perhaps I should try your pressures next event. Now that I have data acquisition, I should be able to determine changes in lateral G's.

I've started a blog here on DSMTuners where I've been posting write-ups (w/ pics & vids) of all my events. If you're interested, you can find them here: DSM Forums - Scott McIntyre Feel free to add comments / ask questions.

Great Job Dallas :thumb: Keep it up man. Nice to see you in the lead in points with a good lead. Keep it up man.

One thing I definately gotta add.

2.4l + Evo3 + Cyclone manifold + FP2 cams = OMGWTFBBQ

I took a guy with a supercharged miata making 250whp and weighing 2100lbs with driver for a ride. He said my car makes power everywhere. Fast or slow corners, it doesnt matter. Nail it at 3k rpms and all 4 tires will be fighting for traction. And this is only at 16psi. The power curve is so flat its ridiculous, pulling hard from 3k to 7.5k.

I tried running 22psi for one event...No way. I cant pull out of any corner cause its just spin city.

Also driving with the set up becomes a lot more like driving an N/A car because their is no lag. In sweepers the gas pedal only seems to modulate the boost level. Then pulling out of the corner I hit full boost as fast as I can get the pedal to the floor.

A lot of people think the EvoIII will just fall off hard at high revs, but my setup seems to have no problem holding 25psi to redline in a 3rd gear pull.

Hey guys, what kind of camber you running with your V710's?

It's my first year on the 265-45-16 so I'm playing around with pressures.

I started with -3.3deg in the front and 23psi at a low grip event at the beginning of the season. This was cool weather and dusty tarmac. It worked fine for that event. Not spectacular grip but that was the conditions.

At the Finger Lakes tour I took out some camber and ran -2deg in the front. I started with the same pressure since it was cool and dusty out for the start of heat 1, it didn't work so well. For my second run I bumped the pressure up to 29 and it felt better. I ended up running 34 hot for the rest of the weekend. I know the EVOs in my class were in the same range but one was on A6s and the other one on V710's but on 18's I believe.

I have another tarmac weekend coming up on the 27/28 and I'll be on the concrete in Peru for the Tour the following weekend, so I'll let you know what pressures I end up with for tarmac and concrete. It would nice to have some more data from various people if you guys don't mind updating with what you run.

p.s. hey Scott!

i'm on street tires, but think -2 is inadequate in front even on 2g. Did -3.3 not work well for you?

Hey Tashko!

The last couple years I ran -3º front / -2º rear, but I found that the car suffered under braking.

This year I'm running -2.5º front / -2º rear. Braking seem to have improved (less lockup), and grip doesn't appear to have suffered. I don't have any quantifiable data though, just seat of the pants.
