well earlier this spring i had a small engine fire and since then ive been slowly repairing, replacing and upgrading worn parts. well just recently i pulled the motor and tranny, because i need to replace some parts including the infamous leaking factory valve seals. well since i had the head torn off, i figured id do the BSEK mod. upon removal of the oil pan, i found this below. the spiral shavings were stuck on the oil pick-up screen, and the black plastic pieces were stuck in the bottom of the pan. the motor ran great before the fire, so i cant seem to figure out where this stuff came from. hope fully someone can help, thanks.

what size it is ?
put something beside to have idea of dimensions......
a pack of cigarettes ?

I dont think its a bearing, but I do not know what it is. Which part of the engine was on fire? or the whole bay? what caused the fire if you know would help.

Are all the pics of the same stuff? Some of them kind of look like the fins off a turbo, check your turbo, both sides, to see if your fins have been broken. Does the car run now? If so did you hear any noises before you found these pieces?

if the car ran "great" before the fire i doubt it is a bearing. although as stated it is hard to tell. however, if i was to guess, i would say it is part of a seal that melted/cracked from somewhere close to where the fire was. time for some dis-assembly to find the now missing part. could not be more specific without more info.

the shavings are about the size of a fingernail, and the plastic pieces are a little smaller in size. the fire was on the passenger side, and the battery cable terminal arced on the frame of the hood, causing sparks which ignited a fuel leak causing a mess of trouble. luckily i was just pulling into work, and was able to extinguish in a matter of a minute of so. the fire mainly damaged the passenger side and firewall components. nothing to extensive, definately worth fixing. but if the motor's trashed, what the use. and BTW, i do not have a turbo.

If they are metallic, I would most definitely take a very close look at the crank. You are already in there and might as well go all the way. Just to be sure.

Good Luck
