Air Scoop using the oval hole from SMIC?

OK, so original ideas are hard to come by and usually for good reason.

Anyone out there tried using the oval hole, where the plastic BOV pipe runs to the stock SMIC on a 2G, to route an air scoop into the engine bay? I recently installed a FMIC and have the hole to fill and thought about making an air baffle the same size as the stock SMIC and mounting it using the same mounting holes. I would then run piping from the top of the baffle through the oval hole and put a screen over the end - which would be close to my K&N filter. The bottom side of the baffle would gather air from the hole in the bumper cover.

The baffle would eliminate some of the debris from making it into the engine bay (leaves, gravel, road sand, etc).

Would this be effective or a waste of time?

Effective, yep. Done before, plenty of times. An even better idea would be to add an airbox closing off your filter from the rest of your engine bay and only exposing it to this port.

Something WAY easier that has been done quite a few times:

Get a longish dryer vent from a hardware store and seal it to the round opening underneath where the stock airbox used to be and route it to the opening in the bumper where the sidemount was. If you seal it with some jbweld or something you can actually feel it sucking in when the car is running.

Even better you can do what was mentioned above and seal your K&N filter area off from the rest of the engine bay so it can only suck up air through the dryer vent. This creates a really great "cold air intake" effect for your inlet air temps.

I plan on doing this in the near future and have seen it done many times. I'll try to find some pics.

That last car still has the sidemount but you can see what I mean by that pic. You would just seal it up to the opening to the left instead of the foglight hole. Unless you want to use the foglight hole...

Angel, Nice setup! Unfortunately I have a 2Ga and have a larger fog light hole, so I will use the left side opening. It does seem a lot easier than fabricating a baffle enclosure - just have to make the box around the K&N.

I like the sucking noise when the turbo starts spooling, does the box surrounding the filter and dryer vent duct muffle that sucking noise I love?

Not really to the question above... here's how I did mine. Keep in mind these pictures were the day I made it and sealed it, its cleaned up and painted now

I should also note I just used a duct adapter from home depot to drop in the hole and hang down a little, I only did that to help prevent splashes from entering the hole. I was going to duct up to the bumper hole but lost track of projects.

Also the metal on the box was thin enough to cut with snips, very effective. I did this mid summer last year, my filter would be hot to the touch before this. Afterward I could reach up in the fender and feel the filter and it was actually cooler to the touch than ambient temp.

Is yours made of cardboard? I weld so thats not a problem for me but the main problem is part of the intake is ran through that hole the duct would otherwise run to, and the filter is squeezed inbtween that and the headlight. (She's dirty right now)

Dang dude... there's like 3 extra feet of pipe in your intake, haha.

I have a full machine shop at my disposal stocked with various sheets of aluminum and steel. Also has a talented welder who is teaching me to TIG weld, so this is a good beginner project for me. I may even put a piece of acrylic in the top to inspect for mice from time to time since we are in the country - middle of nowhere to be exact.

Because it was on a guys(Sterkcid) gsx that I rebuilt the engine in and later installed a external oil cooler on behind it. Not long after that someone on here posted its ebay add asking if it was a good intercooler. You can tell by the weird way the tubes are on angles instead of flat. And the big fins instead of the bunch of small ones.

I've bought Ebay knock off parts for other cars before and I've had bad experiences I don't think I'd ever want any eBay part on my Eclipse at all, they are already unreliable as it is .

Didn't install it. Installed a external oil cooler behind it. About two weeks or so after rebuilding the engine. I'm sure it cools better than the side mount but piping length is just way too much. Very inefficient. I'll see if I can find the add
