2G Aftermarket starter problems

So I just replaced my wife's starter on her automatic DSM I bought an (ultima) starter from O'Reilly. when I start the engine, the starter cranks significantly slower compared to the old starter (Genuine Mitsubishi). It also sounds like it grinds ever so slightly at the very end of the start cycle but initially engages just fine. I have tripple checked all the connections/wires and the battery is good. I even beefed up the ground. My question is has anyone had experience with O'Reilly (ultima) starters? I have a feeling that it's defective or just plain s***.

Whenever you buy a starter or alternator from any parts store, have them test it right out of the box. I've had a starter that was DOA brand new, and an alternator that wasn't working properly.

1g's have different starters for auto and manual, but there is only one part number offered at the parts stores.. I'm not sure if it's the same for 2g, but confirm that it is for the correct drivetrain.

Yes they're different. Anytime I'm at the junkyard I grab a couple starters (and 90 amp alternators) off 94-98 at galants as they're the same and tend to be much more reliable than parts store brands.

Thanks for the replies guys! Definitely a good idea to have the starter tested before you leave the store with it. I too have gotten bad alternators several times from auto parts stores. Personally I'm going to not waste my money on cheap aftermarket crap anymore. I'll just go OEM from now on. It's the more expensive route but OEM parts LAST. You get what you pay for I guess.

I replaced my defective aftermarket starter with a used OEM starter in mine over a year ago... still going strong. Just another option.
