My 93' eclipse 1g is spoiler less....thank god, I despise the look of the stock "spoiler". Would it be possible to order a spoiler or find one from another car that would look good, and bolt it on? How would that work with the hatch? I'm looking for something kind of small but raised, maybe a Supra looking one. Just something like that, because right now it just looks so...plain!

This looks like it flows with the hatch pretty well (not the 200SX that it is on, ours).

They call it a spoiler cause that what it does to the looks on our cars !

I don't know about spoiling the looks, but a good one will lower your CD (coefficient of drag) and can add downforce.

I like to keep my CD down if possible. I would have no qualms paying for the Aero package on the G35, even though it is only .01 drop in CD. Not just rally or racing, spoilers can make the car faster/more efficient on a daily commute. :thumb:

Yeah, them spoilers add so much downforce on our FWD/AWD cars....especially when were going like 200mph on the morning commute....

Im heading to walmart next time I get $100 to plunk down on nice piece of sheetmetal....it should make my 1.8 run 10's at least and allow me to drift it on the highway

i think the only spoilers that help are stock spoilers cause they where wind tested

Well, considering the huge difference in wings between the Talon and the Eclipse, and that they both claim an equal and very low Cx, the spoiler must not matter very damned much.

But dsm4life nailed it.

If you like them, get the one you like most. It's your car, it's your eye that it has to please.

And you know that downforce is especially important for those of us with FWD cars in the 1/4! ;) Personally, I think the 2G cars look nice with the tall GST/X Spoiler, or without a spoiler at all...

Well, interestingly enough, according to the auto design program that I have, a low Cd increases downforce by minimizing lift. Some folks look at a rear spoiler as something that pushes down on the rear of the car. According to the aerodynamic model that I have, it in fact lengthens the body of the car, which draws the wind further along its surface and decreases the lift generated by a vortex. In essence, the rear spoiler can decrease lift along the entire surface of the car.

I would think that a lowered Cd would be beneficial at significantly lower speeds than some mentioned previously. Fuel economy, decreased wind noise and increased acceleration would be good, no matter how minor an improvement.

youre crazy if you think any of these spoilers are going to have an effect on any car on this board.....if they did one of the first modifications would be to slap on a freakin $50 park bench

Spoilers are on race cars for a reason, spoilers are put on factory cars because they look spiffy and convince the average consumer that the car is some kind of "sport" model. There is no real effect, especially at lower speeds! Decreased wind noise?? Increased acceleration???? IMPROVED FUEL ECONOMY????? sorry......no

nutshot: youre facts are definitely right, but the effect is miniscule on a FWD or AWD consumer vehicle, and when I mean miniscule I mean like nothing. Our cars do not generate enough lift!

I don't cruise around at ~150+mph, so I'm not gonna worry about the effects a spoiler has on my car ;)

Infinity G35 aero package. Check it out sometime.

BTW, those cars are not seeing 150mph but they do see a noticable drop in lift and wind noise.

It seems like the least understood aspect of cars are the aerodynamics. It's especially funny on the DSM forums where the large majoroty of the people agree on most aspects of repair and tuning but when you get into aerodynamics it seems like evrey one starts talking out their ass using information based off this one thing they read this one time. I am not claiming to know any more than any body, probably less but I am also not telling any one this is the way it is.

Does any one who has claimed one way or another have proof to back up that claim.
Does anybody have charts or have you actually seen a DSM windtunnel tested with and without a wing?

The rear ends of our cars are so high off the ground that any measure to spoil airflow coming off the rear deck will have little to no benefit (unless it's a large one like on the Buschur Talon). If you wish to generate downforce on that location, you will need to use a wing (which will also create drag).

If you want to reduce lift, put underbody paneling on the bottom of the car. The lower you can get the pressure of the air traveling underneath the car, the better.
