AEM wideband problem

Ive searched but didnt find something like my problem. I just bought a 1990 eagle talon tsi with evo3 16g and it came with a aem wideband the gauge was in but not hooked up, came with the box which had the sensor brand new. I looked under the car and saw a broken o2 sensor half way down the exhaust so I used that for the wideband sensor when I started the car the gauge turned on and went from 14.7 and wen all the way up till it was -- clear in the lean section WTF so I drove it around and when i gave it gas it would be around 14 then when i came to a stop went right back to -- when i went WOT hitting 18psi it would be be between 10.1 or 13.1 bounce around in there. I'm thinking either it's because i put the sensor to far in the exhaust or the sensor is shot. It is connected to the exhaust right under the center console. I only did that because there was a bung already welded save me sometime and money getting the downpipe off and get a bung welded. thanks for your time and responses!
 
Most Widebands have a recalibrate in "free air" procedure. This allows the wideband to calibrate itself in the normal atmosphere first, to get a baseline. Check on their website for details. Hope this helps...
 
i did not know about recalibrating it. ill try that first. how would i do this do i turn the key on with the sensor out in normal atmosphere then put it in and start it up? thanks for the replies. i checked for leaks and didnt find any.
 
Ive heared that a wideband sensor should be 3ft away from the turbo.. I"ve had widebands right after the stock o2 no more then a foot away from turbo and had them more then 3 ft from turbo and never had a problem with a reading.. The recalibration could be your issue but I have installed a decent amount of widebands (aem mostly) and never had to do this. Exshaust leak could be a problem but it would have to be a pretty bad leak that would be noticable.. I would try to get my hand on another sensor and try it out.. Could of been a factory defect
 
You cannot recalibrate the AEM unit. Sounds like the sensor is bad. You can test it by removing the sensor, hold it in a gas soaked rag and check the reading.

If you choose to get a new unit, go with the Innovate MTX-L unit. I have a video up for it.

Sensor placement wont matter for sensor life. Front o2 location is prime to lower the risk of exhaust leaks.
 
Sounds like you either have a pre o2 exhaust leak or the sensor is done for.:| The aem wideband does NOT require any calibration or recalibration as it is set from the factory.

Here is a quote straight from AEM... "Each AEM UEGO sensor is individually calibrated and a resistor integral at the connector body is laser trimmed with this value. This process replaces the traditional “free air” calibration procedure when changing sensors and implements a sensor specific calibration for unparalleled accuracy."

Also, it has been proven again and again by many people here, including myself, that the stock o2 sensor location in the o2 housing works just fine, even though it is close to the turbo.;)
 
Most wideband units ot there come with 2 output wires. A 0v-5v for logging and a 0v-1v which will be for narrow band simulation.

If you want to swap the wideband for the front sensor you'll hook up the 0-1v wire to the front o2 sensor input at the ECU. If you have link then you won't need to hook that wire up as it does it internally. Just need to have the wideband loggig through the ECU through any available input.

thanks does anyone know the wire to splice into the ecu for this to work? the bung down my exhaust could have a leak or is not done right who knows, there was a broken o2 sensor on that bung when i got the car home i saw it and thought WTF
