I was looking at the cam gears I have next to the ones off my motor. The one gear has a plate for the cam position sensor but the new gears have no means of mounting that plate. What should I do to address this issue or is it not an issue? Here is a side by side picture...

Fidanza cam gears (which is what I have) are the only ones I have seen that work with 95-96 DSMs. I think there is one other brand, but I don't remember what it is. Obviously you would need that plate as it is part of the way the CAS operates.

Yeah those are 6 bolt gears. What brand are they? Appear to be Brian Crower.

Thanks for the input guys and yes they are crower gears.

Just swap to a green-top or black-top CAS. Wire your crank and cam sensor harness to a 1g greentop or blacktop CAS and you're all set. And if the sensor goes, its way easier replacing a CAS on the cam than it is wedged underneath the cam gears. This way you can keep your current gears.

Here is a diagram if you're interested:

Wow that is an innovative solution. That will probably be the route I take if extremepsi won't use this set as a credit towards a different set that will work. I hope they do cause that seems to be a little easier then the wiring swap there but the long term benefits of the wire swap seem to be worth it though. I don't know I'll see what they say tomorrow and that will determine my plan of action.

Sounds like a plan man, with this option you would just need to pick up a 1g CAS and pigtail for like $40 bucks wire it in, and another benefit is that you can also manually adjust timing through the 1g CAS. But if the engine isn't out and you're not doing a full out rebuild then if ExtremePSI does let you swap them, then that would obviously be a little easier haha.

It's looking like this will be the route I take judging by how my conversation with ex-psi went today. And that raises a few questions as far as where I can get one of them for $40 and a few about the install. From what I've read the hall effect cas is the one that I will be getting. But from what I understand from what I've read is you wire the crank sensor harness and the cam sensor harness into the 1g cas and therefore eliminate them both. Therefore that one controls the signal for both? Then I change up the spark plug wires and change to inverted firing order in dsmlink? if that covers it all then I'm going for it, I like my cam gears anyways LOL.

That's exactly it. A hall effect CAS, (which is the blacktop) has a smoother curve when you see it on a map, however, they sell for a bit more. Tons of high HP people run the greentop with no problems, as I am. Only reason I say this is because the greentops you will find cheaper, the blacktops go for more. And in regards to finding them, on the classifieds of course! Check the marketplace here and scan it constantly you have no idea how many good deals and thousands you can save buying from our members! In the end either black or green will be wired the same way (by the way, the green top CAS can be powdercoated which makes that big bulge off the VC look nicer!)

And you have the right idea, you will be eliminating your Crank and Cam Angle Sensors, take the plugs that connect to both, snip them wire the new 1g CAS pigtail which is the plug with wire ends that goes into the CAS (you need to remember to get the pigtail from the person you get the CAS from!!) then install the CAS to the intake cam, invert the plug wires, then invert signla on ECMlink and you're good to go!!

Here's a how-to which you may have already seen but it goes through everything very well.

Yeah your not kidding about them not being cheap. I was actually considering getting one from the dealership and was quickly deterred by that price tag. I found a bunch on ebay between 50-100 and then I saw one that was 199 and it comes with pigtail, had 100 miles on it and was dealership bought a year ago. Just kind of awaiting its arrival which is fine since I'm also waiting on my hydraulic tensioner bolts from the local dealership along with a new oil pump sprocket. Soooo dang close to finally getting this motor dropped in! I did actually see that writeup amongst the few ive read and I think I got it down, and thanks to your reply I know I do, so the wait to completion continues. Thanks a million for the advice on that 1g CAS cause ex-psi wouldn't do my swap idea and even if they did I still probably would have gone this route.

Hey man, it's what we're all here for! Glad I could help on the build, $199 is a bit steep but I suppose if you want the sense of security from a practically new one then it's not too bad. I definitely encourage you to check on the classifieds in the future whenever you need anything that doesn't require to be new! And yea unfortunately I figured they wouldn't go for it but at least this way you can upgrade to something easier and more useful!:thumb:

Yeah I'm def happy this is the route I took cause I like options to be available wherever they can be. The 199 was def a lil more then I wanted to spend but I'm already up over 10k with this between engine parts, machining costs and a few (useful) pieces of eye candy. So it was a piece of mind thing for practically new sensor. But I can think of a few things I need that I will go to the classifieds for such as a timing cover and hopefully a local gt35r or one in at least the tristate area.
