Adding coolant, but I hear it going into oil pan

Ok guys, I have a 1g GSX (Shadow) with a major problem. I bought the car for $800.oo and from what I know, its pretty built. When I put coolant into the radiator, the oil pan fills. You can actually hear the coolant pouring into the oil pan. My question is, what could this possibly mean? Head gasket? Time for a new motor? Whats the deal? She turns over just fine, but she wont stay running for long. I dont want to replace the motor if it's still good, so any idea's and knowledge will be very helpful.

WTF

Wow never heard of this. I would check put for cracked head or block. I knew 800 sounded too good to be true...but I could be wrong. If it's a headgasket, then it must be VERY damaged.

Have you drained the oil pan to make sure that its actully going in there?

you have at best a bad head gasket. it must have overheated or overboosted. worst case you cracked the head or block.

He probably has more problems now that he has started the car without proper lubrication. But you never know until you get in there....

How much coolant drains into the pan? Like, all of it or just a little bit coming out the pan?

Both problems lead to major work so I'd roll muy sleves up and start tearing apart. Good luck bro, hit us up if you need help. It's really not all that hard, just time consuming.

What exactly is the difference between the sound of coolant going to its normal places and going into the oil pan?? Well anyways, +N to each of the things people have said already, check the oil to see if there's coolant in it, and if there is, very bad headgasket leak or crack (maybe huge hole?) in block... :(

Im trying to think about this my friend had, a car that had the same problem, i think a valve got smashed into the piston, the piston expanded, stopping it immediately and the connecting rod broke off and smashed a hole in the block/coolant passage (still on crank). It started on 3 cyclinders with a huge misfire obviously. Ran for a second, dropped the pan, and it was full of coolant.

1. When you started the car, did you have oil pressure?!?!

To answer all of your questions. I had oil pressure when I started it. I did not know what was wrong when I started it the first time. I thought it was just because she hadn't been ran in so long. Im completely new to the DSM world, but I know some things about it. Im more of a VW guy. Im planning on ripping apart the head anyway, but what are some things I should keep my eyes out for while doing the tear down?

Yes; but did you check your oil pan to verify if the coolant is going directly into it?

If it's that bad you probably need a new motor. Chances are the head is severely warped and the block is toast. Might want to look into a longblock.
You won't know till you tear it down.

Update! The block is toasted. There is a softball size hole in the block underneath the AC compressor =[ Time for a new block. The head is still good though, so ill save at least a little bit of money.

That sucks man. Well, at least it's the winter and the head can be salvaged. If you need some sweet machine work/rebuild try Reid's automotive in Whitman, MA. They do all machine work for Dent Sport Garage and also did my block. they are very familiar with 4g's and do everything right the first time. Last time I went down there they had a 1400hp 572ci big block on the engine dyno. They are serious...

Pete

Not yet. Its been pouring rain out here for a while. I got a few pics, but I cant get the head off to take pics of the entire block.
